Umm, I was going for a different hummer reference, but that works too.
Not quite. The GAU-17 fires .308/7.62x51 NATO linked ammo. Same ammo as the M60 or M240D/M240G, so far as I know.I heard the rounds for the mini gun are electronic ignition. Is that true? If so, do they use a regular primed cartridge? Inform the ignorant!
Dont those thing fire like 6,000 rounds per min.?????

A very similar weapon, (Sort of,) also made by GE is the M61A1, which fires electrically primed 20mm rounds. The M61A1 is in the F14 and F/A-18, and is the basis for the CIWS "Phalanx" weapon. A three barreled version of it, the M197 is on the AH-1W Cobra.
A third "Gatling" type gun used by the Marines is the GAU-12 which is a pneumatically fired 25mm gun that is used in the AV-8B Harrier II and the LAV-AD. In the Harrier, the gun is fired by air bled from the 8th stage of the engine.
