I'll be driving into PA and OH, do either state require notifying police if you're carrying concealed?

Retired officer carrying under LEOSA, but have to follow local law. If stopped while driving, good to know.

Thanks

My 2 bits.....

If you are a retired sworn LE officer or have a valid LEOSA, Id contact the state regulatory agency that issued your certification or your local FOP/PBA office. ;)
You can also check www.handgunlaw.us & buy a 2014 edition of www.Gunlawguide.com .
Atty David Wong put out a guide to US gun & knife laws for travel(to include DC, Guam, USVI, etc). Wong wrote a few industry articles about HR218/LEOSA.
I wouldn't know how to reach David Wong directly but you might try LinkedIn.com or online.

In short, Id stay calm, be polite, speak slowly & clearly and explain to the trooper or officer that you have LEOSA & that you are armed.
In these summer months, many cops know tourists & travel on roads will increase. They also know some clever drug rings or street gangs can get creative. ;)

PS; you might want to look at www.CCWsafe.com too. They offer a LE/military discount. They can keep you out of jail & on the road. :)

Thanks for the responses, especially to the folks who recommended handgunlaw.com

The answer is given when you click on any state. OH yes, PA no.

I generally notify, but good to know if I must.

Read LEOSA. It's quite clear as to what state or local restrictions one must obey. According to it's provisions a retiree, properly certified, is exempt from nearly all.

Again, READ the statute.

Speedo:

In OH, notify if you're carrying.... However, not all LEO's know about NOT having to notify if you're licensed, but not carrying at the time.

"Carrying" implies a loaded handgun on your person or in your vehicle, whether or not you have easy access to it. Unloaded, stored in the trunk, etc., is NOT carrying.... Magazines need no longer be empty. (07/30/2011, I think.)

Can't say about PA, but I believe that "not required" may be valid. You can also carry a loaded handgun in your vehicle even if not licensed in PA. But you can't carry it outside of the vehicle.

Regards,

Ohio law requires licensees to notify, not sure how that applies to folks using LEOSA.

Not true. Permit is required for carry in a car in PA.

From Handgunlaw.us:
"Open Carry is legal except a valid permit/license is needed to carry a loaded firearm openly or concealed in a vehicle and for openly carrying in the city of Philadelphia."

rtroha:

I'm not sure about LEOSA either.... Lots of "follow the laws of the state you're in", but....

bhesler:

Philadelphia may be a whole different world :D.... But you could be correct about licensing v.s. carrying a loaded weapon in a car without a license. IMHO, I would presume you're correct. Gotta go ask Gary Slider, I think....
