What's the point of sending an infantryman to Ft S
I'm getting ready to PCS to Ft Sill in June of this year. Don't ask me why an 11B is going to an Artillery post...I'm still scratching my head over that one. Anyways, all my googling is for naught and I can't find anything about good gun shops/smiths in the Lawton area as well as ranges and the like. Ft Sill's pathetic attempt at a web site mentions nothing about a POW range on post. Does anyone here know about that? Any info would be appreciated.

Mike

I was last in Lawton in 2001. At that time there was a range (MB-1) that was fairly nice. Covered pistol range, uncovered rifle range out to 100 yds. There is a also a shotgun range there. At the time they had a very active, and nice, trap and skeet range also. It was seperate from the other range.

All I ever bought there was mil-surp and a couple of private party guns. Lots of pawn shops.

North in OKCity is a good range, I am sure someone will tell you about it.

There is hunting and good fishing on Ft Sill. The town itself is nothing to write home about. I grew up there, left for the Navy in 1971. Returned in 1997 and the only change was the addition of a few restaurants and it was a little bigger.

Murf's in Duncan is probably the best shop in the area. I got some great deals there when I was at Ft. Sill. There are a few pawn shops in Lawton that are OK, but I made it a point to stay away from them.

The range on post isn't bad. Not usually crowded eve though it's kind of small. As mentioned above, the pistol range is covered and the rifle range is not. The benches were in pretty good shape the last time I was up there. They used to have a caliber restriction on the rifle range. I think it was supposed to be nothing over .30 cal. but .50 is the only one they really don't allow.

Wow, that brings back memories. I did boot camp and AIT there back in '84. There are infantry units just about everywhere, even if it's primarily an artillery post or anything else.

Besides, you never know what type of unit you might end up in.
Trust me, I speak from experience. :banghead:

I was at Altus AFB for Flight School in 1987. I bought my Glock 17 from Adamson’s Gunsmith Shop in Lawton. He also worked on my AMT Longslide Hardballer.

I don’t know if he’s still smithing but:

Here is a link to an Oklahoma shooters' website where you might be able to get more info:

As to why an 11B is going to Ft. Sill, there was one INF battalion there back in the 70s that was used for school support for the Field Artillery school. When I went thru OBC, the infantry shot the mortars we used to learn how to adjust mortar fire. As to what your job will be now, I haven't a clue.

Welcome to Oklahoma!

I havn't been to Ft. Sill since the late '70's to qualify a bunch of reserve officers with the .45 ACP, have heard they have made some roads and villages to prepair troops for the sandbox.

Why else send an 11B to Ft. Sill but for to hold the targets for the gun bunneys:neener:  :what: (former 19D myself:D )

I went through basic training at Fort Sill back in the late 70's. There was an infantry battalion stationed there, but I can't say if it is still there. The Wichita Mountains are just north of Ft. Sill and are a very nice place to rock climb, bike ride and do other outdoor stuff. Riding a bike up Mt. Scott is always a real treat. :)

There is no INF Bn currently at Sill. Nothing but FAGs (Field Artillery Guys). :D Having already been a Drill Sergeant, the only other places for me would be running a range or being an instructor at either the NCO academy or BOLC II, which is a new program for 2LTs prior to their attendance of their branch basic courses. Thanks for the info so far.

Gun Smith

When you get to lawton try Cache Creek Fly Shop its on d st. just north of 11th.

You will like him he is nice to talk to, and he also certifies for the self defense course for your concealed weapon permit.

He uses a private rangen in Duncan. Hope that helps I just go out in my backyard and im only 35 miles south in Grandfield.:)

...BOLC II, which is a new program for 2LTs prior to their attendance of their branch basic courses. Thanks for the info so far.

That's exactly what I was thinking re: an 11B going to Sill. If so, I'll see you there:) I got my orders for the end of October...as a little LT student ...

Then keep an open mind, I teach HOW to think versus WHAT to think. Check out the Ft Sill site. Click on the link to 1-30 FA. Click on BOLC II. It'll give you a packing list and course overview. Of particular note is the PPT slide presentation on BOLC. It has the training schedule from the 1st cycle.

That brings up a question: Is OK reciprocal with VA vis a vis CCLs?
Yes. OK accepts everybody's.

I second Murf's in Duncan. They're really great people. Just watch out for meth heads. Stay away from the gas station on Elk just across from the hospital after dark. Creepy stuff. Stay away from the Shell on 81 North of town, too. :uhoh: In fact, don't stop for gas in Duncan except at the station in front of the walmart.

If you've got a free weekend, and I'm around (which is happening with disturbing regularity), let me know. I know a great little place to go pop off some pistol rounds. Incidentally, are you interested in a couple acres and a 40-footer with a great little place to pop off pistol rounds out back?

Oh, and stay out of those casinos.

I can see how having a family might make it rather unattractive. The place needs a good bit of work, too, so it's pretty much single men with decent income and good handyman skills only. If I can figure a way to raise the money, I'll probably buy it and have the trailer hauled off. I'd rather have a pop-up than that place.

It has been quite some time since I've been to Sill, but if you're interested at all in the history of the Indian wars or the Chisolm Trail (and the associated period), there is much to be found in that area. Sill has a pretty good museum on post, and there's also the Great Plains museum in Lawton on... Ferris, I think. I also remember a period gun that is fired across the lawn in front of the museum on post. I believe it's pre-Civil War, but I could be wrong. Since you're a family man, I would take the kids to see them fire that gun. I'm sure they'll get quite a kick out of it.

The post also has a number of historic buildings (yeah, which one doesn't?), but you will find one of the historic houses with different dormers. I don't recall if it's a single and the others are double or the other way around. Anyway, ask somebody at the museum just why it's different. There is a funny story about that.

You also have Geronimo's grave. You'll probably get acquainted with him soon enough. There is also the artillery half-section. That's one of the ceremonial units on post. They do all the big ceremonies. It's pretty cool, though.
