I'm a little confused by the question but let me try to answer it anyway
the indexing rod has one end with a square nut on the end and another end that's twisted. the twisted end goes at the bottom, square end goes into the turret. It may take some twisting of the turret to get it to settle into position, and I've found raising the cylinder (lowering handle) often helps with this (it disengages the cylinder from the twisted part and enables it to turn).
