I have been using the Lee autodrums for some time now and have had nothing but fantastic results until today. I have not done any 9mm with the autodrum yet and was setting up to do some when I ran into a problem.

The 9mm expander plug in the powder through die will not engage the autodrum enough for a complete cycle unless I crank it down so far that the case is flared WAY too much. By too much, I mean that the inside diameter of the case mouth hits around .362 before the powder drum engages enough to drop a full charge.

Anyone run into this and have any ideas?

Thanks!

Resistance? Does the drop tube move freely in the through die? Quality of brass? Weak or split brass could cause that.

Usually I have close to that problem with 380 brass. But 380 brass wall is thinner than most other pistol brass.

Works on all my Lee dies (9MM)??

Do you use the auto disc riser to clear the Lee Safety prime? But you still should not need that if you do not prime on the press.

It works well with my Le 9mm dies. At first, I was using it without the riser and I was experiencing you same issue. All I had to do was adjust the die out a little ways.

Later, I added the riser (same as yhou would use with the auto-disk) and had to readjust again.

Shouldn't bee too difficult to find your correct die setting.

The difference between flaring too much and flaring enough only amounts to a partial turn of the die on Lee dies ( if thats what your using) . Back of 1/8 turn until its not over flaring the case and retry drops.

I don't believe it is the brass. It does this on all of my cases and they are mixed head stamp. The drop tube does move freely. The same audo drum doesn't have this issue on any other caliber I have used it with.

While I do normally use the riser on my dillon press to clear the powder check, I am not using it here since I am using my lockout die instead. For giggles, I threw the riser on and still had the same problem.

This is why there is most certainly something wrong with my combination of dies and powder measure. It won't even start to throw powder until the case is so flared that it is about to split.

In any case, I really needed the 9mms so I swallowed my pride and used my Dillon powder measure that came with my 650. In reality, it is as accurate as the powder drum it just doesn't see much use since the advent of the auto drum since it takes a bit more effort to set up.

I still want to figure this out. It is burning a hole in my pride.

Maybe the die itself is not screwed in far enough? Lift should start before the flare gets that far and if not screwed down enough it wont throw.

Other than that I'm at a lost too...lol.

Good luck and maybe call Lee....sure they would have the answer!

Are you using the Lee 9mm powder drop die? I know that the Auto Drum will not fully cycle if a short case, like a 380acp is in the mix. Guess how I found out! :banghead:

A photo of your setup would be helpful to understand what is happening.

LOL... yep, been there done that... I know as soon as I deprime... Somethings not right on the LCT press.

Have loaded a couple of thousand 9mm using the Autodrum... never have had an issue yet with it.

did you check to make sure the powder didn't bridge? I've heard of that happening. BTW, I removed the auto-disconnect feature. Do you use yours with it?
