Lee Enfield question

I had an old sporterized #4 that had been butchered before I gave $25 for the old gun. I put 20 years and probably 1500 rounds through that old gun, all surplus ammo too, as the surplus store had it for $.02 per round, I wish I had kept that old gun as I cannot remember ever missing much with it. Not a group shooter just a hunter and plinker.

Complete the job that fate began. Embrace it. Rebarrel it to 45-70 or 30-06 from a short barrel, get a nice hooded front sight and rear peep put on, and clean up the stock profile to something light and compact.

If you absolutely must get a "real" correct gun, use the opportunity to shop for one with your wife and teach her about the various models and their history. I've never understood the "restorations" of these guns; they were Bubba'ed in the first place since hunting rifles were so much more expensive, and now they're being Bubba'ed again in an effort to make what are basically forgeries because unaltered guns are so expensive.

I would also refrain from dumping a Christmas gift, at least immediately. But since it's all out in the open and whatever, you might as well use it as a way to share your hobby with her (whether it be the historical aspect or the modification/design aspect). Be careful, though, lest she start getting into Mosins or parts kits and "invest" away all your dough! :D
