I have a Lefever Nitro Special, Side-by-Side, 12 Gauge that I am reassembling for someone. I have it back together with a couple exceptions, and I need some help.

1) There is a J-shaped device about 1/8 inch thick. Looks like it was fashioned (bent into a J) from the same material as the hammer and sear pins. The schematic on the Ithaca Gun Reference Center shows it (part 106) and calls it a "Trip ___" I cannot determine if there is another word after trip. There appears to be a spring associated with it (part 124) referred to as a "Trip Spring. At any rate, I cannot figure out where and how it goes back into the gun or what it does.

2) What put pressure on the top lever to keep it in the locked position? I assume it is a spring, but I cannot find a spring shown or listed in the schematic. Also, if there is a spring that fit into a channel in the receiver area, what hold the spring in place. It also is not listed in the schematic.

I hope you didn't already read my original post. I forgot you said it is a "Nitro Special."

When you close the action the barrel flats press down on the button in the water table which hits the Trip. The Trip, like the sear in a rifle or revolver, moves out of the notch in the bottom of the top-lever's stem allowing it to close under spring pressure.

So, the top-lever is held over to the right in the same way a revolver's hammer is held cocked back. It is not held over by a spring.

Hopefully someone else will be able to talk you thru the reassembly process.

It's been a few years since I did the re assembly on mine but if memory serves that peice goes.in the bottom of the receiver. I will look and see if I still have my pics. JW

On the pic of the bottom of the receiver that you sent me it goes in the slot on the upper left side. I can't recall what direction but there is only two ways to try and the correct one should become obvious.

1MOA@500,

Thanks a million; I got the J-shaped device in place. I assume there was a spring under the device. Any idea what the device does?

skeeziks.

I am not real clear on your post. First, "the water table" confuses me; I don't know what is. Regarding the trip, is there a spring associated with it? If so, and I assume there is, how long is it, and does it do in the channel before or after the trip. It seems that it would go in after the trip so that it is keeping upward pressure on the trip. When this is all in place, and you press the barrel down forcing the trip down, what causes the top lever to rotate clockwise into the locked position?

skeeziks.

One more thing. I assume the short leg of the trip goes to the front and comes up under the barrel. What is “the button” in the water table?

It's the flat part of the receiver that the barrel flats mate up with.

On a Nitro Special you'll see what looks like a little button protruding up thru the watertable. That's the trip.
When the trip is "Tripped", by the barrel flats pushing it down, it's just like the sear on a revolver when you pull the trigger and the sear moves out of the notch in the hammer and the hammer falls under the pressure of the mainspring.
In our case, the top-lever is the hammer.
