LEO vs. My 5.11 Pants!

Well, to add to the 5.11 / Utilikilt saga: I was in Seattle all last week in training for work. There were four Fed cops and some DOD guys in my training class. I wore my 5.11s to the class a couple of days. None of them told me to drop my drawers. I don't even think they knew anything about them one way or the other. I had several comments (positive) regarding my Dillon T-shirt though. :)

I didn't see anyone wearing a kilt in the city of Utilikilts.... :p

I picked up my first pair of 5.11s this weekend. So far, they've lived up to the hype, and I'm impressed. :D

I don't think I have the legs for a UtiliKilt. :neener:

I own a pair of Utilikilts and I see folks around Dallas wearing them from time to time. In this heat and humidity it makes the day much more bearable. For those 'certain' occasions, they do have 'modesty snaps'.

The pockets are large enough to hold up to a 6 pack of longnecks, believe it or not.

Regards,
Rabbit.

Hmm. Learn something new every day around here. I've worn 5.11's for quite a while and never made the association with cops(I am utterly fashion unaware). I've been asked a couple times when out of town if I was a cop and had no clue what even made them think I might be... Duh.

Ladies and gentlemen, jamz has lost his mind!

"We'll be right back after these messages from our sponsor.......Royal McRobbins"

We just started carrying Royal Robbins gear at work. I made shameless use of my employee discount, and purchased two pairs of the 5.11 khakis. I love 'em...they're sturdy, compfortable, have lots of pockets, and look better than blue jeans.

When I go up to Fr Knox tomorrow, I'm going to stop by US CAv and most likely pick up a 5.11 vest. Carrying stuff in trouser pockets is becoming uncomfortable, especially in summer, so a vest is becoming more attractive. My alternative is to wear BDU-style shirts all the time. The clincher for the RR vest is the elastic pocket for water bottles. I wish it had one large pocket on the right front instead of the mag-shaped ones.

And, yes, it will allow carry of my .45 on the waist.

In a recent article, Mas Ayoob stated that most people don't associate a vest with a gun.

Sorry, but as much as I respect Ayoob (as much as any gun-writer), he is also in the business of selling the stuff of those who advertise in the magazines he writes for. IMO, there are enough semi- to completely-knowledgeable gun folks out there that anyone wearing a vest anywhere but at a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Photo Shoot will draw immediate attention. Kinda like the trim, young guy in the short no-nonsense haircut wearing a fanny-pack. You might as well scream "YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO NOTICE THAT I'M CARRYING A GUN."

I've been recently looking at the 5.11 pants/shorts too. I'm in the need of some casual pants that will work for CCW, and I've seen more than a few guys at the IDPA matches wearing them. I guess I'm looking for something that is practical (read: pockets), yet doesn't SCREAM as I said above. I'll have to think a little more about them.

My next pair willbe smaller.

I keep telling myself the same thing.

Like a few others, I was not familiar with these pants. But they are just what I've been looking for. I'm going to have to become a poser.

I swear I saw a price of $230.00 for one of those utilikilts. That's not American dollars is it?

AZLibertarian, what Mas was saying (and I didn't make clear) was that few non-gun people associate vests and such with guns. As for the short-haired, trim (fairly) and young (I wish) types, I fill that bill. Once, at a pin match, I was in cut-offs and was carrying in a waitst pack, and another shooter came up and asked if I was DEA. Another time, I was wearing a blue blazer and khaki slacks, and I was asked if I was FBI.

Since I have a permit, I don't mind if police make me, and if it scares away the BGs, fine. I just don't want to frighten the sheep.

I wear either a pair of RR 5.11 shorts or pants almost everyday for about the last couple of years or so (they're a really great place to carry all my stuff).

I just wear the RR 5.11s with a funky Hawaiian or BEN SHERMAN shirt (also sometimes with an OAKLEY shirt), and I have never had any type of "cop" comment made to me -- and I even have a BM Griptailian clipped to my RR 5.11 pocket !!!

:what: :neener: :what:

David, you look so UN-like a cop, they probably think you are, but don't dare say anything :neener: back!:D

There are some stores with "no weapons" signs up down here. I may just wander in wearing the vest (but no gun) to see if I get any nibbles.

I forgot to add that on most days I wear, along with my RR 5.11 shorts or pants, my awesome OAKLEY SI BOOTS (thanks, Skunk :p ), and still no "cop" comments!

I think the "secret" might be wearing the funky Hawaiian, BEN SHERMAN and OAKLEY shirts along with the 5.11 shorts or pants.

Perhaps, if I wore my 5.11s with a Glock, HK or SigArms black polo shirt, I might get some "LEO" comments! ;)

In any event, I think the 5.11 shorts and pants are of high quality and well-designed for my day-to-day use.

 :D

Skunkabilly, that's a priceless picture! Now this guy:

is a poser. I think I used to beat him up for lunch money. Back in 1983. When I was about 4'2" and 80lbs.

I checked the Royal Robbins website and they don't call their pants 5.11 anymore. There is a new company called 5.11 Tactical that sells the pants. Does anyone know if RR owns the new site and if the pants they sell are the same?

Hey, being Scottish and all I DO posess a kilt (in my clan tartan none-the-less!) and would be PROUD to do a THR/TFL kilt-shoot... but ANYONE wearing a kilt had BETTER have the required Dirk installed in the correct location!

(An Emerson Commander is acceptable for all non-scottish kilt wearers utilizing the "Utilikilt"...)

Which also brings up the question "does this plain leather holster make my butt look big when I wear it W/ this plaid kilt?"
