Hi,

I just bought an M&P 40 pro "CORE" 5" barreled model. I'm looking for a decent Red Dot Sight to try out.

I'm leaning toward the Leupold Deltapoint because of the wider lens which reportedly makes it easier to pick up the red dot both during the draw and during recoil. Unfortunately reliability on it seems spotty and the zero adjustment screws are reportedly finicky.

On the RMR front, if I end up with one, I'm leaning toward the RMR02 LED model. Apparently the adjustable LED RMR's (RMR07) aren't up to snuff reliability wise yet and have problems in slide mounted applications. So, the disadvantages of the RMR02 would be smaller lens making dot pickup more difficult, the dot always staying on which means more frequent battery changes, and automatic brightness adjustment only, which means it might be susceptible to washout in certain situations. The advantage is that it's probably more robust than the Deltapoint and the zero adjustments are easier to use.

Any thoughts are appreciated. The pistol will be pretty much a range/competition use pistol only. I'll stick to standard night sights on my carry/duty/home defense pistols for now.

Neither I'd personally go with the rmr04, no batteries to mess with, plenty bright day time or night and a nice size dot easy shooting well beyond normal pistol ranges.

+1

One of the Trijicon "dual illumination" RMR models is IMHO the way to go for anything but a range toy. No batteries or switches seals the deal. I've several and they've held up well, even this one on a Kahr CM40:

My personal favorite is the RMR05G with a green dot.

I have an RMR02 on my duty gun, an FNP45T, I carry it on duty and have no complaints. It is rugged, holds a zero, and battery life is great, I change all my sight batteries annually for spring quals and the RMR02 was still going strong. I also had one on an FNS9 that I sold to a friend, never had any problems with washout in any light with either sight and if you cowitness the dot with your sights window size isn't an issue. You're not focusing on the dot when aiming, you focus on the target and superimpose the dot on it, thats the beauty of these sights.

I have a 1911 being built now that I'm considering having David Bowie set up with a Deltapoint. I'm unaware of any of the issues you mentioned, pretty much everything I've seen about Deltapoints is positive and Bowie swears by them, he has one on his duty gun. I'm sure that either sight would serve you well.
