I know that the grip covers a J frame backstrap. Is it thick rubber reducing recoil at the top of the backstrap, or is it thin rubber just for looks?

It depends on the make of the grip. Most are thick enough to provide some cushioning effect. My own preference is to forget those rubber grips and go with the old style that allow a good solid grip for DA shooting, but then I am old and out of date.

I had a set of the original j frame grips. LG205 I think. They worked great except they were hard plastic and were not comfortable with +p ammo. I would imagine the 405 would be much better.

it's thick and is designed with a air pocket to reduced felt recoil

I have them and they are great at helping hold onto the revolver and reduces recoil as well.
