Has anyone used RL-17 for the Berger 6.5 Creedmoor 140 gr Hybrid target bullets and if so how much?

I loaded up some Berger 140 gr Hybrid target with RL-19 according to the Berger Load manual and used 43.0 grams of powder.

My average FPS was ONLY 2558 when it should have been close 2699. :(

Same day I loaded and shot some Hornaday ELD-M 140 gr with 41.3 grams of RL-17 and they shot 2705 FPS. :)

It was all the same gun, brass, primers and the same COAL.

I emailed Berger today and they said I have to call to get that info, they won't email it anymore. So if I can find time tomorrow I will call them.

Thanks.

If you CAN get the data from the company, I'd take that over a bunch of strangers on the interwebs, however, I'd start at the same starting load you used on the hornady and work up.

"...Hybrid target bullets..." Friggin' marketing types. The thing looks just like any HPBT.

I think the claim is that they have a secant ogive section for supersonic drag reduction, but also a tangent ogive section for easier/better self-alignment in the bore and consequent reduction in sensitivity to bullet seating depth (the standard knock against secant ogives).

I'm completely unqualified to opine on the extent to which this arrangement offers most of the best of the both worlds as they claim. IDK whether they work.

You used a different barrel held different than the one that load data was tested in. It also has different chamber, bore and groove dimensions. Your components lots were different than theirs. Your ammo's neck tension was different.

The velocity difference you observed is normal. Welcome to the world of variables and tolerances. If someone else shot that load in your rifle, it may shoot 71 fps different.

All of which is why I never owned a chronograph. Never cared what the exact muzzle velocity was. A reasonable guess was close enough.
