Is it ok to load say lead or jhp bullets in the short leverevolution brass? I have Hornady dies which I have read will work with the short brass. Also will this make the pressure levels unsafe due to short brass? I am wanting to crimp in the cannelure, but not sure about MINIMUM length and pressure.

I was not aware they used different brass. Nor can I find anything on Hornady's website about it. How much shorter is it?

The brass is shorter because the Hornady FTX bullet is longer. If seated in a regular case, it would be too long to work through the tubular magazine. With a rimmed case like a 45-70, I don't see a shorter bullet and therefore a shorter OAL being a problem. But maybe there is something I am overlooking...

Opinion ...

A reloader would have to take in consideration the smaller case volume and the effect it would have on pressures ... with a mild/lower load you would think it to be safe. You would need to work up the loads using caution. I know it has been done, but have no idea where you could get proper data.

If you applied the same logic that Weatherby uses in their rifles that have the "long freebore" to keep pressures down... then the extra freebore that would be created by by loading shorter brass with a longer jump to the rifling ... would also allow lower pressures ... keeping in mind the case volume.

Just an opinion ... so keep that in mind ... I believe that Jim Watson could give you some help here...

I have done it with lead bullets. Keep in mind pressures though. I loaded lead to middle of the road trapdoor data and shot them in a Marlin Guide gun, it worked great.

My issue was crimping, I was making these for a friend and didn't want to grind the bottom of my seater/crimp die down to accommodate the shorter case so I ended up just setting the case on top of the shell holder, while I was very careful if I planned to do more I would customize a die to work with the shorter cases.

I gave away my hornady brass. The FTX rounds hang and jam all but the newest rifles. I forget exactly why, but that was what the jamming` was caused by. No hornady 45-70 for me anymore.

The .055" shorter case length (Less then 1/16".) will make no meaningful difference in pressure.

That's a fact!
Your powder measure has more margin of error built into it than the length difference between these two cases of the 45-70 will produce in pressure.
