Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Zeroed at 50, then shot from 75 to 300 yards in 25 yard increments. Paper to 275, and
and then a steel plate at 300 yards. It has 6 shots, 2 shots each at 12.0, 12.1, & 12.2 Mills.
No, I don't remember which shots were which.

Center X dope was close to about 125 yards, then the speed of the Long Range showed up.

Do you guys find the Kestral to be a better ballistic computer than something like Strelok on your phone? I understand the wind metering and atmospheric pressure measuring are very helpful, but is it worth the cost over Strelok?

is it better? I don't know about that
it's definitely more expensive lol

Currently, I use the Kestrel because of the AB software and the Custom Drag Models.
In the beginning when I was learning how to shoot, the guys that won the local matches and competed in the Pro matches all had them as parts of their kit. I learned to use the Kestrel from them, so I never did go to any of the phone apps first.
The Kestrel is fast to me and doesn't need to have cell service to work.

You’re not really buying a Kestrel for the ballistic engine - it works the same as any other ballistic engine anywhere else.

I carry my kestrel and have my rifle profiles loaded, but I predominantly use StrelokPro for my data… acknowledging, StrelokPro may no longer be a viable option any day, so I’m ready to seamlessly transition over to my kestrel.

I like my kestrel interface better than the AB mobile interface, and having automatic data input into the onboard calculator is easier and mentally more comfortable for me than making the inputs in the app. I like running only 1 or 2 environmental inputs in StrelokPro, but again, it could be nixxed any day now.

Absolutely! It gets real time right there weather and uses that data, vs getting weather off the net for somewhere near/or not so near, you.

I had to big jumps in better dope, truing the BC, and switching over fully to the Kestrel. My buddy Jeff continued using Strelok for a bit and got weather from me, but has now transitioned to the Kestrel.

That said, Strelok is very good and easy to use.

Remember the JB Weld I put on the Vudoo mag to keep it from being able to rock back when a bag pushed against it, pointing rounds down just enough to jam? I also made a mag block attached to the arca rail.

Well, the JB finally fell off, so I took a small thumbscrew (8x32 thread), drilled/tapped the mag, screwed it in, then ground it slowly to fit until it was where the mag isn't under any pressure, hangs free, but can't get pushed back. After I ground it, I removed it, lightly blue loctited the hole and the threads, and screwed it back in.

I like the cellphone interface better than the Kestrel.

Strelok is still on my phone but I'm slowly moving to Shooter just in case it gets removed.

Going to shoot in the Altus NRL-22 Finale tomorrow. With two 7th place finishes coming into tomorrow, I'm looking good for "old gun" of the year. Yep, I've been registering properly as an old guy since I got left out of the conversation last year because I didn't know there was an old guy category. *Sigh* :)

Will be shooting the Vudoo in the Manners with the Tract scope. I'm not 100% sold on the barrel tuner yet.

good luck today,
Waze has saved my butt a couple of times when there was a problem on the road ahead.

There is a local range in west GA that has NRL22 matches, I'm going to head out there and check it out, I'm not sure if they have PRS or if they do centerfire.

Outstanding!

I see another barrel tuner in your pics, but you don't sound convinced. I'd welcome hearing a bit more about your experience the EC. If you've done a write-up elsewhere, feel free to point me there.

The top shooter there has one and says when you get in tuned it right you can mostly leave it alone. He also said it can build up crud/get dirty in the shroud causing it to open groups. Clean it and you’re good.

I have an ATS tuner that I have not tried, the way it attaches crud wouldn’t build up in it, but I haven’t played with it yet.

Play with some good ammo and figure out what your rifle likes and it’s good enough to win if you’re up to the task. I’ll never beat Jeremy (top shooter), no matter what equipment I have, he’s just too good. His rifle is around 30 lbs and is solid as a rock when rested on a bag, but I can’t tote something like that’s around (mine’s 15.5), plus he shoots a lot and reads wind well.

I was 9th overall yesterday, so I ended up with two 7th place and one 9th place finishes for my top three. Jeff was 10th yesterday, just did edge him out.

The shoot was a mess as far as confusion on how to shoot stages, one stage with no yardage for the far target, etc, lots of fussing going on. Our squad shot the pipes one shot and move, which hurts me, I missed the first two, but saw the second miss, hit five and timed out. Some of the squads (And I argued for this), shot it like he explained it, which was shoot two and move, so they had an advantage. The other thing is the description said there were two targets, but there was only one. Lots of "debate" at the end of the match by a couple in the running for top five. There was really no excuse for all the mistakes in the five stages that were not the monthly NRL-22 stages.

One was called "The Hail Mary". It was a 33% IPSC at 333 yards with no way to see misses and the wind was brisk. I had a three, the top shooter had a four, a couple of folks got 6, but 10 of the 30 shooters got a 0, seven shooters had a 1, two had a 2. Not fun. If there had been a berm, or it had been a full sized IPSC it would have been a little more doable.

We had another stage with 100% IPSCs at 300, 250, 200 etc, and I hit them ok. It was shoot at 300, then a tiny sliver of a target at 50, then 250, then 50, then 200, and if you missed at 50 you had to switch to weak side. It was kind of fun. Directions were good too.
