Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

The last stage I shot yesterday. You can hear the wind and see it ripple my shirt. My last shot was right a the buzzer. I missed one strong side.

Start strong side, two shots at 40 yards, 1.5" hanger, two shots at 70 yards, 2.5" hanger, two shots at 80 yards, 3" hanger, then switch to weak side and shoot in reverse order. So strong side near to far then weak side far to near. 12 shots, and my 12 rounder had acted up, so I used two mags.

Figured I'd get some constructive criticism by now. I know what I see good vs not so good, am very interested in others take on it. :)

I can't offer any solid CC here - you would've kicked my butt on this stage. I just have a hard time getting my dominant eye to relinquish control when switching to weak side so on these stages, I take my time to nail the strong side, and usually time out on weak side.
I see the three bags, I personally never get comfortable with the puff pillows- I typically rely on my Schmedium or Pint Size game changers only. How do you like the extra bag?
You looked like you were zoned in and focused.

and 11/12 still doesn't suck at all...I know you were hoping for a clean.

The extra bag can be very handy and make it more solid, under the arm, belly, whatever, don’t use one much, but they rock where useful.

I was using a pint sized or schedium bag, and it worked well. Then I got the grayops plate intending to use it occasionally. Then I tried it with the armageddon bag and liked it for flat surfaces, then had the idea to use it like in this stage. For the tank trap I do the same thing, pint sized, then the rifle with plate and bag on top, really steadies the rifle allowing me a much lighter touch disturbing the crosshairs less.

I need to do some more experimenting, but this setup has seen my best scores. One stage we dropped prone, shot the far target, then moved to a barricade to shoot through a small opening, then move to three different car trunks. I used the bipod and pint sized bag only, dropping the bipod after the prone shots to help squeeze the rifle through the hole.

They’re proud of it, and I got the quick disconnect for speed and convenience. It’s very well made and I like it a lot.

I have another cheaper one to hold the same bag, but it’s floppy and not nearly as stable.

Would your MD allow “support side” to be shot with the dominant hand running the trigger? Doing so tends to reduce how much we have to break position, so your left hand can keep driving the rifle on target and you’re not shifting back and forth between driving with your hand vs. your shoulder when we have to go up to the bolt.

I might try to keep my face on (or closer to) the rifle when dialing, as well as when panning (are you in bifocals? maybe a turret magnifier ring on your scope so you don’t need to come up high enough to use the bottom of your glasses?). Just economy of movement - spending a little less time moving and moving a little less means we don’t spend as much time hunting for targets AND don’t have to hunt as much. I hang my pump pillow on my pocket as well so I don’t have to independently manage it when I’m placing the rifle - you kind of placed the big bag, then placed one bag, moved the rifle, moved the big bag again… if you tether the big bag, you eliminate some of the back and forth. Less time moving = more time aiming and managing trigger.

Mag pouch on your belt for the spare mag. Economy of movement again - wherever the second mag came from, you pulled it out, sat it down, then came back to it later. That could be one movement where the right hand opens the bolt, drops the mag, comes back to the right hip for the spare mag, and right back to the gun, mag in, bolt close, bang. So there was a few seconds there in spare mag management which wasn’t available to productive firing process.

When addressing us prior to shooting, the match director said we had to do everything weak side except for running the bolt, including the trigger finger and eye. Other places/match directors may do it differently.

Yep, need the readers to see the markings clearly, the magnifiers that mount on the scope don't work for me.

Will try to remember that about the big bag.

Finally ordered a mag pouch this evening.

I envy the young kids who can still manage the rifle with one hand. Sigh, the things I miss this days, vision, grip strength, climbing ability, overall balance.....

I'll be honest, the first time I watched it through, I thought, "YTF is he moving his head so much?" and then the second time through, I felt the grey hairs in my beard start tingling as I remembered how close I'm getting to needing bifocals... So that'll be an adaptation to my own shooting "technique" in a few seasons...

I don't know if they're still sold this way or not, but the Wiebad Pump Pillows used to be sold with a "chest strap" so we could strap it on like a bandolier - haven't seen guys doing that in several years now though. I forget what Armageddon Gear calls their bag (Fat bag?), and they sold theirs with a bungee cord tether too - some guys used to just hang it from their belt, other guys wrapped it around their chest over one shoulder. Again, not as common now. But a lot of guys will at least clip it to their belt so they can have both hands free to place the rifle before building the bag into their frame. I don't use my pump pillow often, I carry it up rooftops almost every time, but almost never end up using it - but I'll admit, I'm lusting after the Wiebad Rush Stair Bag after playing with one at a 2 day match last month. It's absolutely massive, and I'd have to make a pretty big mental concession to pack it around (it DOES make a dandy stool to sit on between stages), and they're pretty proud of it, but it turned a steep rooftop into a modified prone stage...

Does anyone shoot at West GA or River Bend? Both near Atlanta, if so I would love to watch a match, meet fellow Highroaders and get some Ideas for our range. I'm looking at getting a 22 to go with my 6.5CM, I would love to use my savage 17hmr or go 22mag but I noticed only 22lr allowed at local competitions.
I found a model64 Savage for a reasonable price but was thinking a bolt action would be better. Bergara is local (1hr away) and I thought about looking at their offerings. Is there any others I should look into? Looking for reasonable price and decent accuracy.

I shot Benchrest matches at River Bend many years ago.

Do they have PRS matches? NRL-22 matches?

That looks to be around two hours from me.

Yes That is how long it takes to get to my daughters house in Montgomery, she lives on the NE side. Wouldn't be a bad ride getting of I85 in Lagrange, I think that way you would miss all the Atlanta traffic. River Bend would probably be closer to 3hrs and you would have traffic in the afternoon. If you decide to make the trek let me know and I'll try to hook up with you.

Close to three hours now that I moved out of Montgomery, 40 minutes longer to Altus. It was just over two hours. It's an easy ride though.

Which side did you move to? I came up one time to Heflin AL and picked up I-20, nice lazy ride and easier than crossing back through Montgomery, I think West GA is the first exit in GA exit 5.

Northeast of Montgomery, which is good for GA.

My shooting buddy Jeff and I might make that rimfire match next Saturday. I hope we can, should be fun.
