Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

I had forgotten how much fun my 6BR is to shoot. My son and I were going shooting on Father's Day, and he brought (edit: his girlfriend) along. Since the BR has such low recoil, I brought it along for her to shoot. She thoroughly enjoyed it and hit steel all the way out to 1000 with my 105 RDF load.

I need to get a different stock for it. It was in a Bravo for a while and I liked it, but my 223 is wearing it that now and I want to try something different.

Only ~7mos delayed from expected delivery, but the last piece finally came in for my second complete “prize table build” in 6yrs of competing - this finally completing my son’s match rifle. I picked up half off certs for the stock and the action, picked up full value certs for the trigger, barrel, bipod, and Arcalock rail at pro series and regional finale matches, and won the scope by being fastest clean run on the tie-breaker stage at a pro match last season. The only things I ended up buying outright were the brake (bought on Black Friday pricing), arca hanger for the Atlas, and the rings (which I got for 2/3 retail for Mil/leo/instructor discount from Burris). I did forget to picture the mags - which technically I didn’t pick up on tables, but rather I traded mags I DID pick up on prize tables, since MDT doesn’t typically put their blocked mags on tables.

Shout out to Defiance Machine, Manners Composite Stocks, Nightforce Optics, TriggerTech, B&T Industries (Atlas bipods), Area419, MDT, and Proof Research for supporting matches. It’s probably still more expensive than a 10yr old boy should be shooting, but considering I ended up paying less than 1/3 of street price, he and I are both grateful for the opportunity to piece it together for him.

Yep. I was eyeballing those the other day for .22 LR matches, talked myself down. :)

It WAS my intention to put this NF on my 22 for matches, but I had the choice of a Burris RT25 and this NX8 for this second “prize table build,” and I just felt a lot better putting the NF on his rifle (the RT25 is fine, but obviously not in line with the NF - I stuck that on one of my gassers instead). I do like this NX8 a lot, so I might have to buy another to stick on my 22 afterall, and after a little playtime with this one, my son says he needs another for his 22… we’ll see how 2023 ends…

Shot a Regional PRS 22 Rimfire yesterday- got the sunburn to prove it too lol. First PRS rimfire this year- only 2nd match PRS this year, I've actually found the time to make with a crazy work schedule.
35th for the day, so not terrible, 63 hits of the 83 shots taken (max was 100) so I need to work on the speed and building positions but overall happy with hit percentage. Furthest target was 8" square at 300 yards.

Well… I neglected the fact I had ordered my son’s stock with an M24 barrel channel, so that Proof Competition Contour wouldn’t fit his stock. When I ordered that action, I had actually planned to give my older Defiance Deviant match rifle to my son, and use this Ruckus for myself - BUT, since we’re only partway through the season, I was planning to leave my current rifle alone and make the swap this winter. But that millimeter of interference accelerated that plan and I had to tear apart my match rifle and play musical chairs with stocks, triggers, brakes, and scopes.

Since we were planning to shoot a match this weekend, both shooting together for the first time, we were behind the 8 ball when I got cornered by an unexpected business trip this week. I wasn’t able to zero the rifles after swapping stocks and scopes as planned, and wasn’t able to do burn in load development for my new barrel. I assembled the rifles Sunday, made ammo for my son on Monday, and made ammo for my new Ruckus on Tuesday before leaving on business that night. Not having time to do load development, I picked an arbitrary load, 30.5grn Varget under 109 LR Hybrids in Alpha brass, seated 20k off of the lands. Returning Friday night at ~2:30am, I had ZERO rounds down the tube when I arrived at the match Saturday morning, and neither my son’s rifle nor mine was zeroed. I had 30min beforehand to zero and get chrony data for both rifles - for my new Ruckus, that meant the first shot on the first stage of the day was only the 11th round down the barrel - but it did hit the target! I shot 63/93, good for 77 match points. I only cleaned one stage and missed 1-3 (10-13rnd stages) on 5 other stages, but then bombed two stages with a 3, and a 4 on one stage. Ended up 13th out of 35 - but the good news is that my barrel is burned in to be ready for load development for the Pro series match I’m shooting in 2wks. My son shot really well - he timed out on most stages, so he only ended up taking about 60 shots for score, and he made 29 impacts. He shot two different movers this weekend for one stage, one conventional mover sliding side to side, then another pair of circles on a pumpjack which peeked up from behind the hood and trunk of a car, and he hit half of his shots, hitting both types of targets - more hits on that stage than 2/3 of the adults (including his dad)! He was also the only shooter on our squad to hit the farthest target of the day with all 3 out of 3 shots.

Both of these rifles have been “prize table builds,” meaning I won the components or half-off certificates at matches, so without the hard work of PRS Match Directors and the generosity of sponsor companies which donate to the prize tables, these likely wouldn’t be a part of our lives.

That sounds like an awesome day!

@Walkalong - Argh, I should have put two and two together sooner, but I’ve been talking for a month or two with a guy down your way to get him geared up and squared away. He mentioned the match at AP this wknd, but had plans for his Anniversary. Looks like the only one left for the year there will be the regional finale in Sept, but he’s going to gear up and be ready for next season.

Ah dip… I haven’t shot a boat sim since March… I do enjoy shooting them - it’s fun to see the dichotomy of techniques between scorpions and pancakes.

Nice job!

Yea, the heat got to me today, not shooting though, dang it. :)

96 here today, what do y'all call hot in MI? :D

I haven’t shot a boat sim since March
yeah this one was straight forward- 9 points- 4 impacts on a 100% IPSC, 3 impacts on a 66% IPSC, and 2 impacts on a 50% IPSC- 545 yards
I managed to knock one of my bipod feet off when I started the stage. I also knocked my send-it level off on a barricade wall....
still had fun. which is one of the main goals

Yeah, it's been hot here, 101 today but humidity was in the low teens. Not totally unusual for this time of year, as long as you stay out of the sun, it isn't bad.

I'm going shooting in the AM for a few hours.

Do they shoot as well as the Ruger Precision Rifle (AR 15), which has garnered a good reputation for accuracy, at least in its price range.

Any cons to them?

I ask because I am considering trying the PRS game (They have a place in my state) and they have a "production" class (Less than 2K rifle and less than 2K scope) division as well as a "senior" category.

Looks like the Savage GRS could be a viable option as well. Thoughts?

Any other options? Not ready for a 4K rifle (Drool) and 3K scope just yet, gotta start saving my pennies, plus find out if the game is for me. :)

Any and all insight is welcome. (Scopes too)
Savage 110 in '06 was my first centerfire rifle. I was about 15 yrs old 1959, or so. It was accurate, made more so with a Bishop aftermarket 60% finished stock. Only had a 2.5 Weaver on it, but it shot sub-1 MOA with handloads. It won a few turkey shoots, but sold it and got a Rem 700, 6mm and never looked back. It was a sub-MOA rifle, with bedded action, floated barrel.

This arrived Tuesday. I looked hard at the NX8 2.5-20, but these turrets look much more old eye friendly.

It will be going on the new rifle I’ve been buying parts for. Stock came today. Sold 40 hours PTO to help buy it, will be selling 40 more this pay period to help with the scope. I’m at 340 plus hours.

Midway had 15% off of a lot of scopes, including this one.

Those are nice scopes. I looked at them but ultimately I wasn’t willing to pay for it. Haha
I remember the days I had pto banked and carried the max over I could… the single dad life has kinda changed that. Lol

I can carry 400, but have lost some in the past when it snuck up on 400 and I didn't notice. Hit that and you cannot accrue any more, so it's just wasted. I usually sell 80 a year, 40 after March 6th, then 40 at X-Mas. I likely won't be there at X-Mas this year.
