Well… I neglected the fact I had ordered my son’s stock with an M24 barrel channel, so that Proof Competition Contour wouldn’t fit his stock. When I ordered that action, I had actually planned to give my older Defiance Deviant match rifle to my son, and use this Ruckus for myself - BUT, since we’re only partway through the season, I was planning to leave my current rifle alone and make the swap this winter. But that millimeter of interference accelerated that plan and I had to tear apart my match rifle and play musical chairs with stocks, triggers, brakes, and scopes.
Since we were planning to shoot a match this weekend, both shooting together for the first time, we were behind the 8 ball when I got cornered by an unexpected business trip this week. I wasn’t able to zero the rifles after swapping stocks and scopes as planned, and wasn’t able to do burn in load development for my new barrel. I assembled the rifles Sunday, made ammo for my son on Monday, and made ammo for my new Ruckus on Tuesday before leaving on business that night. Not having time to do load development, I picked an arbitrary load, 30.5grn Varget under 109 LR Hybrids in Alpha brass, seated 20k off of the lands. Returning Friday night at ~2:30am, I had ZERO rounds down the tube when I arrived at the match Saturday morning, and neither my son’s rifle nor mine was zeroed. I had 30min beforehand to zero and get chrony data for both rifles - for my new Ruckus, that meant the first shot on the first stage of the day was only the 11th round down the barrel - but it did hit the target! I shot 63/93, good for 77 match points. I only cleaned one stage and missed 1-3 (10-13rnd stages) on 5 other stages, but then bombed two stages with a 3, and a 4 on one stage. Ended up 13th out of 35 - but the good news is that my barrel is burned in to be ready for load development for the Pro series match I’m shooting in 2wks. My son shot really well - he timed out on most stages, so he only ended up taking about 60 shots for score, and he made 29 impacts. He shot two different movers this weekend for one stage, one conventional mover sliding side to side, then another pair of circles on a pumpjack which peeked up from behind the hood and trunk of a car, and he hit half of his shots, hitting both types of targets - more hits on that stage than 2/3 of the adults (including his dad)! He was also the only shooter on our squad to hit the farthest target of the day with all 3 out of 3 shots.
Both of these rifles have been “prize table builds,” meaning I won the components or half-off certificates at matches, so without the hard work of PRS Match Directors and the generosity of sponsor companies which donate to the prize tables, these likely wouldn’t be a part of our lives.
