Long range. What do you like over 308 and why?

The longest range available in our country to civil shooters is 600 meters, so 6,5x55 fills all the needs,
shot from a 1909 Carl Gustav, a CG 63 match rifle or a Unique Alpine tpg 1, fitted with Schmidt&Bender .

(FNH range in Zutendaal is longer but off limits :banghead:, though I can hear the shots from my office)

I used to use 7x57 in a modern action.

I now use a 257Roberts out to 600yds.

I am thinking of doing up .260Rem for longer shots. Much better numbers than the .308.

Almost any of the 6 or 6.5 based cartridges will be better, assuming the case length is long enough to take advantage of heavy for caliber bullets.

308 is a thumper when used on long range sessions. I tend to shoot similar velocity rounds out of smaller tubes. I am currently learning the art of the .243 and truly love the .270. A friend swears by 300winmag and another by 338 lapua. I shoot longer(time and round count) than they do because I'm not best up by recoil.

For really reaching out, a rifle chambered in 338 Lapua Magnum - or perhaps a Cheytec .408 if you can afford one, or a 50BMG. A source I respect recently mentioned using 7mm Rem-Mag as a long-range cartridge. Less frontal area to the bullet than thirty-cal slugs - so lower drag, med-weight bullets permitting high MVs and also favorable ballistic coefficients. Not as long-ranged as a 338, 408 or 50, but less punishing recoil.

I love the 30-06 over 308 anytime. Shoots everything the 308 does faster and longer.

I chose 6.5x47 Lapua which seems to be an extraordinarily easy cartridge to load for, is more efficient than one would think with that small case and RL17 or H4350.

Any of the medium powered short to intermediate length 6.5s: 6.5x55mm, .260 Rem, 6.5 Creedmore, etc.

Reason:great selection of long heavy bullets that have more energy than the .308 at range, less recoil, and the trajectory of a .300 magnum.
