Looking for first rifle purchase: advice welcome!

This version wasn't around last year when I bought mine. The composite stock should have the gun lighter in weight (but I have my eye out for a walnut stock!) I want that muzzle brake! The factory metal magazine wobbles in place - use either Ruger polymer or Alpha metal box mags...

That rifle right there is unique also in that it's stainless, but in the shorter 16.10" variation.

I know you said you'll be looking at some other rifles this evening, but you can't go wrong with this latest variation of the RGS. Either way, good luck to you. We expect pics! and pardon my manners: Welcome to The High Road.

:)

Another option is to go with a Tikka T3 Lite. It's a lightweight 6.18 pounds, removable magazine, and 22 inch barrel. Try handling one and see how you like the feel. It's more on the hunting side of the ledger, but put a 2-7x scope on it and it should prove nimble at 2 power. You can also buy extra magazines.

Just read through the linked thread, thanks!

Looks like you'll be getting the "improved" version/spring/whatever, soon. Let us know. Too, I might sign up over there on the Ruger forum and join the bobbed-RGS crew. lol.

I'll have to go out to the shop, open the safe and hug my Ruger after all this chitchat. Hee!

So what am I looking for?
-Accuracy up to 500 yards (marines used iron sights from that distance with m16s to qualify)
-Quality and something that will last against the elements
-Light weight and versatile
-Home defense and possible survival if needed
-Hunting (I'd like to learn one day)
-Fun

The "accuracy up to 500 yards" thing is pretty subjective. What's your definition?

From what I've seen, it's common for people to be enamored with the idea of a light-handling rifle for HD and "survival", but when they get to the range, they simply set it on a bench and try to shoot itty bitty groups with it. Nothing wrong with either, but if you honestly want a light-handling HD "survival" rifle, it'd be best to actually practice toward that end. If you want a target rifle to print itty bitty groups on paper, get the tool up to that task - or at least understand that while the carbine you're interested in may hit steel 500 yards, it might not be up to printing itty bitty groups on paper. Again, what's your definition of "accuracy up to 500 yards", what are you going to be happy with, and how are you actually going to shoot it at the range? Something to think about.

FWIW, some have recommended a Tikka T3, and I've been very impressed with my Tikka CTR - it's a light tactical rifle that would fill your requirements - 10 round mag, rail, tactical bolt knob, threaded barrel, a smooth-as-snot action...and it's a real tack driver to boot, as Tikkas generally are. I used in a tactical rifle match recently to good effect, and I plan on hunting with it next year, as it shoots circles around my custom FN SPR.

I'd also agree with posters who recommended a .22LR. Shooting well takes trigger time, and a shooting any centerfire with decent ammo is gonna cost, especially if you don't load you won ammo. A rifleman should always have (and use) a good .22LR rifle, IMO.

Hitting black from 500 yards away with iron sights on a m16. That's my experience of accuracy.

Listen, Im not educated with the ins and outs. I know what I was trained to do with a single rifle.

I want a good rifle to get into the EB's and Flows again.

But since you mentioned I should probably start with a 22... I've played with those as a kid. Maybe I'll take a buddies to a range before bzoing my new rifle.

I will definitely look into other rifles before a purchase. Thanks for the advice, I don't take it lightly. I do want my purchase to be something substantial... I'm not expecting to go HAM at a rifle range... But I want to bond and learn from a good rifle.

Don't know if I explained myself well enough. But I do have some experience...

EDIT:

I am taking a hard look at that T3 CTR!

EDIT 2:

Really hard decision... still learning towards ruger though

They're out there! Thank you for the link. I'm looking to acquire just the walnut stock.

When I mentioned I wanted the stainless version of my laminate model, the stainless barrel model I wanted measured 18".

Anyhoo...

That Tikka Compact looks like a good one, but where're the irons?! :p How about a forward mount for an EER scope? Some of us like that setup. :D

Yeah, it doesn't have iron sights. Are the barrels threaded? Doesn't mention on website or I couldn't find. The action Ive read and seen in reviews is very smooth... Accuracy bar none. A lil more in price.

Still leaning toward ruger gsr. If I hate it, I can always trade or sell.

just get an SKS or an AK, nothing better for home defense, and nothing more fun, you can buy the fudd stuff later but everyone should have a quality military semi automatic in their collection

Congrats!

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about it when you get it. Pictures too, if you can.

I've never seen one of those in person so far. I'd be tempted to trade my laminate stock for one. :)
Thanks! O I will

I know I'm probably stubborn, but I do appreciate everyone's advice. It did help my decision too.

The AR platform has been around for awhile and just about everyone has one but me. Never owned one and probably never will. Not dissing anyone's choice of rifle but I wonder how many people who have an AR have really spent much time with bolt guns. Years ago (last century) bolt guns were all we had and we made some pretty nice ones. Actually we still make some nice ones, but most people prefer the AR platform.

The first thing I noticed was a discussion about 5.56 when the OP said he didn't want one. The reason, more than likely, is that cartridge isn't legal for medium sized game in some states. I can understand that because most people don't hunt but a lot of people shoot. 22 caliber rifles never have been popular for medium sized game. Now all you AR fans jump in here and claim otherwise but the cartridge wasn't designed for medium game. 6 mm is the cut off here.

There are lots of nice bolt guns out there in 308 in the OP's price range that will work. The scout's give you a lot of options for optics and will give you the accuracy and energy you want out to 500 yards if you really need it. Personally, that would be my choice. Get a cheap 9 mm Glock for SD and forget that part of the equation.

thinking of this optic, heard alot of good reviews about it and the price is amazing. Gonna wait till I bzo the iron sights and fire the rifle, but I might try this out to see if I like scout scopes (IER).

what do you guys think of the Leatherwood Hi-Lux 2-7x32 optic?

I've only ever used iron sights and acogs before. So Im interested in trying a scout scope for this rifle.

With my 30-30 lever action with a Leupold scout scope I feel quite comfortable shooting it out to 400 yards (range work on steel, not hunting). I think you will like a scout scope.
