Main Battle Rifle Pictures

The term "Battle Rifle" is tricky. It's a relatively new term in firearms nomenclature. Some will say it applies to WWI era and later full power semi-auto rifles only. Others will say it includes bolt-actions as well.

By the latter definition, the only battle rifle I've ever owned was an M1903 Springfield w/bayonet when I was in high school. Wish I had taken a picture.

I'd like to pick up a Springfield Armory M1A one of these days. That would qualify under either definition. However, if I suddenly found myself in battle I would not reach for an M1903 or an M1A. I'd opt for my Ruger Mini-30 "Battle Carbine?" I do like Springfield's 18-inch Scout Squad version though. It's like a Mini-30 on steroids. Too bad it doesn't qualify as a rifle because the barrel is under 20". (Just kidding... sorta)

Anyway, I'm not gonna be the one who tells the guy who shows up to help with a 20-inch barrel SKS, complete with integral bayonet, that he forgot to bring his "Battle Rifle" to the battle. (Ok, maybe I'll tell him later after the battle and we won.)

We could say that a "Battle Rifle" is an antiquated full power service rifle of wars past, which has for the most part been replaced by carbines chambered for intermediate power cartridges...

To me, battle rifle is a full power rifle in semi-auto.

But if we go with just the main full power rifle of its time, I can include an 03A3, Mauser M48, and a Gew98.

Eons ago I squeezed the nickle until the Indian screamed and the buffalo pooped and bought a CETME...a Century CETME. It worked for exactly one magazine and stopped. I had the ground bolt, the whole nine yards of "modifications" to allow what once was a fine warhorse to hobble along like a bland, lame cart pony. I am very happy to see someone who got one of those abused rifles to work right I was lucky enough to find someone who took it off my hands for almost what I paid for it, but I swore off the Century Drunken Monkeys for the rest of my life.
The more recent offering from CAI actually isn’t a CAI.

Its internals are CETME surplus with a PTR barrel and lower receiver/trigger group.

I got one back in 2016 and it’s been perfectly reliable.

I’m guessing they’re not available anymore.

For some reason I include the ability to deliver a substantial buttstroke (without negatively affecting the weapon) to the rather artificial definition of "Main Battle Rifle".

Not for every instance, but .. .

Advancing against even multiple opponents, hand-to-hand, where you have the boar spear will cause them to retreat.
Conversely, if you have no loaded firearm, and someone else advances on you with a bayonet affixed to a rifle, you will retreat.

Two factors play out:
--- People think you won't actually pull a trigger -- but do think that you will very likely stick them with that knife.
--- Naked blades evoke a non-proportional visceral fear by their simple existence in a physical confrontation.

Never short sell the value of a 4-ft stabbing spear in what can become closing contact.
