Major Barf alert here.

Another student shares his wisdon on international affairs. Is horsewhipping illegal in Massachusetts? This guy is a graduate of the Teddy Kennedy charm school!

Pat Tillman is not a hero: He got what was coming to him
By Rene Gonzalez
April 28, 2004

When the death of Pat Tillman occurred, I turned to my friend who was watching the news with me and said, "How much you want to bet they start talking about him as a 'hero' in about two hours?" Of course, my friend did not want to make that bet. He'd lose. In this self-critical incapable nation, nothing but a knee-jerk "He's a hero" response is to be expected.

I've been mystified at the absolute nonsense of being in "awe" of Tillman's "sacrifice" that has been the American response. Mystified, but not surprised. True, it's not everyday that you forgo a $3.6 million contract for joining the military. And, not just the regular army, but the elite Army Rangers. You know he was a real Rambo, who wanted to be in the "real" thick of things. I could tell he was that type of macho guy, from his scowling, beefy face on the CNN pictures. Well, he got his wish. Even Rambo got shot in the third movie, but in real life, you die as a result of being shot. They should call Pat Tillman's army life "Rambo 4: Rambo Attempts to Strike Back at His Former Rambo 3 Taliban Friends, and Gets Killed."

But, does that make him a hero? I guess it's a matter of perspective. For people in the United States, who seem to be unable to admit the stupidity of both the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars, such a trade-off in life standards (if not expectancy) is nothing short of heroic. Obviously, the man must be made of "stronger stuff" to have had decided to "serve" his country rather than take from it. It's the old JFK exhortation to citizen service to the nation, and it seems to strike an emotional chord. So, it's understandable why Americans automatically knee-jerk into hero worship.

However, in my neighborhood in Puerto Rico, Tillman would have been called a "pendejo," an idiot. Tillman, in the absurd belief that he was defending or serving his all-powerful country from a seventh-rate, Third World nation devastated by the previous conflicts it had endured, decided to give up a comfortable life to place himself in a combat situation that cost him his life. This was not "Ramon or Tyrone," who joined the military out of financial necessity, or to have a chance at education. This was a "G.I. Joe" guy who got what was coming to him. That was not heroism, it was prophetic idiocy.

Tillman, probably acting out his nationalist-patriotic fantasies forged in years of exposure to Clint Eastwood and Rambo movies, decided to insert himself into a conflict he didn't need to insert himself into. It wasn't like he was defending the East coast from an invasion of a foreign power. THAT would have been heroic and laudable. What he did was make himself useful to a foreign invading army, and he paid for it. It's hard to say I have any sympathy for his death because I don't feel like his "service" was necessary. He wasn't defending me, nor was he defending the Afghani people. He was acting out his macho, patriotic crap and I guess someone with a bigger gun did him in.

Perhaps it's the old, dreamy American thought process that forces them to put sports greats and "larger than life" sacrificial lambs on the pedestal of heroism, no matter what they've done. After all, the American nation has no other role to play but to be the cheerleaders of the home team; a sad role to have to play during conflicts that suffer from severe legitimacy and credibility problems.

Matters are a little clearer for those living outside the American borders. Tillman got himself killed in a country other than his own without having been forced to go over to that country to kill its people. After all, whether we like them or not, the Taliban is more Afghani than we are. Their resistance is more legitimate than our invasion, regardless of the fact that our social values are probably more enlightened than theirs. For that, he shouldn't be hailed as a hero, he should be used as a poster boy for the dangerous consequences of too much "America is #1," frat boy, propaganda bull. It might just make a regular man irrationally drop $3.6 million to go fight in a conflict that was anything but "self-defense." The same could be said of the unusual belief of 50 percent of the American nation that thinks Saddam Hussein was behind Sept. 11. One must indeed stand in awe of the amazing success of the American propaganda machine. It works wonders.

Al-Qaeda won't be defeated in Afghanistan, even if we did kill all their operatives there. Only through careful and logical changing of the underlying conditions that allow for the ideology to foster will Al-Qaeda be defeated. Ask the Israelis if 50 years of blunt force have eradicated the Palestinian resistance. For that reason, Tillman's service, along with that of thousands of American soldiers, has been wrongly utilized. He did die in vain, because in the years to come, we will realize the irrationality of the War on Terror and the American reaction to Sept. 11. The sad part is that we won't realize it before we send more people like Pat Tillman over to their deaths.

Rene Gonzalez is a UMass graduate student.

Well for people like him I would like to see the Pell Grant money that he's probably sponging off the US government be linked either to military or national service. Hell, he's a graduate student which means he's probably a political science PhD(Piled High & Deep) major who doesn't have any marketable skills to offer the real world. The only thing that people like him can offer is their opinion and criticism of others who are trying to make a difference in the world and even though it makes us mad his opinion doesn't really matter because it's not backed up by any substantive and empirical conviction or action.

To be honest, I'm personally against the war in Iraq but that's my political choice. I've served with the 1/75th Ranger Battalion in Savannah. I missed going to Panama by about 4 months back in 1989 but several of my friends and a lot of the men that I trained did do their duty when called upon. They laid it all on the line, which is more than the author of that slanderous article will ever do in his miserable existence on this earth. All people like he can do is talk and fortunately what they're talking about exposes him like others of the same ilk(a la Jane Fonda and Rosie O'Donnell).

Pat Tillman sets the standard for the new American fighting hero.

Nah,

the Collegian did right. They aired both sides, and kept the spirit of the 1st Amendment. I think the guy is a GUSANO, PENDEJO, MARICON, COCHINO, and a COBARDE, but America is all about such worms being able to speak freely. And we all get to see the real face of the Left. Perfect all around. I wouldn't have kept the Collegian from publising it if I could have.

If we laid down all our arms today, took off our uniforms and said we would no longer fight, our country would be overtaken by multiple invaders in short order. The Rene' Gonzales' of the world claim to be the intellectual elite, and act as though they speak for the collective conscience of our country. The reality is the Rene' Gonzales' of the world don't know what reality is. It sounds all wonderful and idealistic to have a "Wage Peace Not War" sign in your yard, but that's all it is, idealistic but not realistic. And therein lies the liberal dilemma: how to express an opinion while skirting the truth, much less reality. It almost seems redundant to keep saying that the Pat Tillman's fight and die so that the Rene' Gonzales' can be free to exercise their Constitutional rights, even if the Rene' Gonzales' are the real "pendejos", but that's the way it is. The left is fond of trotting out a quote attributed to Einstein that goes something like "you can't simultaneously prepare for peace while preparing for war." I got news for the left, not only can we but we should. And the biggest reason why is the fact that there can be no peace without freedom, and somebody has to have the intelligence and the guts to defend it when necessary. There were Pat Tillman's before, there are more Pat Tillman's now, and there will be more still in the future. And while the Rene' Gonzales' of the world will continue to flourish and spout their bile, the Pat Tillman's of the world will continue to defend their right to do so. Pat-you served your country honorably, you conducted yourself with dignity, and for your sacrifice we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Partisan Ranger nailed it. Only minorities speaking out about the "dominant socio-economic majority" get the benefit of the 1st amendment; any white male making a claim about a minority would be tarred and feathered before being burned at the stake and his article would never see the light of day in the student newspaper.

In fact, if a white male student even submitted his opinions to a independent publication not affiliated with the university, there would be a call to expell him from the tolerant liberal/progressives who dominate (infest?) college campuses, but not before going to a "cultural sensitivity" re-education camp.

Here you go:

class level: Doctoral
major: Political Science

He has a right to his opinion, you have a right to your feedback, especially since his email, and probably his phone, are governmentally provided.

The scariest thought about this walking failure of a man? He probably teaches undergrads part of the time as a doctoral student.

I have a hard time believing that Puerto Ricans are unpatriotic, selfish, and have no concept of sacrifice. This person is a disgrace to the Puerto Ricans I've known.

There is freedom of speech. The government can't stop you from speaking your mind when you are not fomenting violent overthrow of the government.

BUT

There is no right to publication.

That is a political decision made by the editors. Shame on them. Dead people can’t defend themselves. How about a libel suit.

Yet another reason for the vigorous enforcement of immigration and sedition laws.

Bingo. There is no inalienable right to have your imbecillic articles published in the school paper. Can I get a "duh"?

Of course, the radical left in America has been deeply hostile to anyone who has served in the armed forces for a long time. This swine's scratchings are only an expression of what an entire class of people thinks, but (generally) has the sense to not openly say.

Aye. A good family friend of ours who is Puerto Rican is a great guy and served honorably in the USAF. Rene Gonzalez is just a typical left-wing know-it-all jerk, which has nothing to do with him being Puerto Rican.

Actually, it's good thing that the paper ran that piece. It allowed the author to expose himself as the leftist idiot that he is.

Am I the only one that thinks he should just take his ass back to Puerto Rico? Why enjoy the benefits of being in the United States if you’re not willing to allow the country to be defended and be grateful for it?

When did we grant Puerto Rico its independence?

Anyway, while I’ve seen nothing to warrant calling Pat Tillman a hero, I don’t think he or any other slain soldier “got what was coming to him.†To say so merely demonstrates Mr. Gonzalez’s poor taste and lack of tact.

Wish I could see his traitorous face when he starts reading his emails.
Probably grinning from ear to ear.
This child just wants attention, and he's succeeded beyond his wildest expectations.

Also, I agree with Mr. Fink - hey may or may not be a hero, but he didn't "get what was coming to him". He did make a sacrifice - that can't be denied.

I wish that I could say that I'm surprised, but regrettably I'm not. Thus far in my life I've known four people from Puerto Rico, and all were excessively arrogant. (They also had rather large chips on their shoulders to boot) One can only hope that these individuals are not indicative of the population as a whole, otherwise I'd say it's time we cut that island territory loose.

When I read something like this, and I have friends in Europe as well, that espouse this kind of attitude, I realized something.

Unless you are an American, you do not understand. You do not understand what a unique country America truly is.

I site the 20th century. Why on God's earth did America save Europe from Imperial German hegemony in WWI? And why did we come back to Europe and the Pacific some 20 years later to save Europe from the ravages of Nazism and to save the Pacific from the cruelty of Japanese militarism? Why did we stand up to Communism during the cold war? Why did we go to Bosnia to protect Muslims from extermination by so called "Christian" serbs? Why do we intervene in the world's trouble spots to try to keep the peace? Why, why, why, oh why did we not let the rest of the world rot?

Because Americans are basically good. Because we want to do the right thing. Because we are a country born of recalcitrants from other countries who left those countries to do our own thing. Because we are free and independent thinking. And yes, because we are a Judeo-Christian nation with the morals of those religions infused in our Nation's laws and our people's hearts.

They will never get why Tillman made the ultimate sacrifice, but any true American does, and anymore, the rest of the world can go to Hades for all I care.

I dont understand why the press and T.V just dont talk about this crap when people print these things. We have the right to say what we want but it takes the press to get it out to the public and crank us up.

Im usually all about reasonable debate but sometimes you have to call something what it is. This person's view is sick! I have no respect for the thought process that led to such garbage being written!

<scarcasm on> To bad he isnt a white, Christain, pro-life, pro-gun male or some variation thereof. Then the media would hang him out to dry. <scarcasm off>
