Hi all,

To get rid of the thumb hole on a Mak90, parts have to be replaced with US made parts (i.e., the trigger group). Except for the stock, a Mak90 is military grade. Are the Tapco (or equivalent) replacement parts on par with the mil-spec parts that are in the gun? Has anyone noted any deficiencies after replacing said parts?

I have a Polytech AK and had the same problem concerning the thumbhole stock.. Bought a Tapco trigger, disconnector and sear probably 15 years ago and have had no problems. I made sure that it had the "double hook" like the original and have had no trigger slap at all. Also replaced the magazine floorplates and followers with US made parts. My understanding at the time was that this satisfied the 922r regulations with the 5 US parts.
If I`m in error and am now a felon, please let me know.

Replacing the original thumbhole with US made stocks would increase the domestic content. I dont see the problem unless you are dead set on foreign surplus furniture.
Magpul, Timbersmith, and other US manufacturers make high quality AK stocks. I think PSA was even selling replica Type 56 wood like they use on their "Norinco" series.

The Tapco triggers are castings. No way I would swap an OEM Chinese trigger group for one if I could help it.

(c) For purposes of this section, the term imported parts are:

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions (N/A)
(4) Mounting blocks (trunions)
(5) Muzzle attachments (maybe)
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods (N/A)
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings (N/A)
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors (N/A)
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates
The MAK90 should have all but 4 of the above, putting your count at 16. US-made stock set drops it to 13. If no muzzle device, then it drops to 12.

Those last 2-3 can be tough: magazines or trigger components? CMC does make a nice AK trigger in the $140 range.

It has been a long time since I played the 922R game. From what I remember, a US magazine counts as 3 parts - body, follower, and spring. A complete furniture set counts for 4 parts - stock, pistol grip, hand guard and gas tube cover.

I have to agree with @NIGHTLORD40K, I wouldn't swap out a factory Chinese trigger group for a Taco trigger group.

Do a search online about fixing the trigger slap issue. This can be fixed.

Here is a good article about AK trigger slap and how to fix it.

I converted my Mac 90 years ago. I can't remember the name of the trigger group I used (Red Star Arms?), but it looked like the Tapco, which was heavily used for that. I doubt you'll have any issues.

Edit: Yep, Red Star Arms, I can see it on the paper work in the pic.
