We may move to Mississippi, or western Alabama, or way west panhandle Florida.

Family aspects dictate that we may need to make a move in the next year to support "family aspects."

Doing the "friendly states" bit, but would very much appreciate anything you'd have to offer.

Mississippi is gun friendly as States go. If you like to hunt, public and private lands are available. We have white tailed deer instead of Mule Deer. Water fowl hunting is a big sport here as well as fresh and saltwater fishing.
What are you looking for? Like many others, the state varies a good bit from one area to another.
Good luck in your search.

Fla Panhandle or Lower Alabama as we used to call it. No state taxes and gun friendly. I haven't been there in quite awhile but I remember beautiful country a good huntihg, and stil a bit necky which I like. I'm originally from Mobile and I like that area too just not as much. Can't comment on Miss I've been thru it once but I didn't get none on me.

I lived in Birmingham a couple years and didn't like what I saw. Huntsville or Mobile both have it over B'ham, should you move to 'Bama.

The Son, recently having his heart transplant, & his wife, recently being diagnosed with MS ---- from their research, seems that CO's not the place to be. Too many things advantageous for them to go to Mississippi .....

Too, The Wife needs to "have her garden & G'kids" close-in, etc. It's high time.

Frankly, I'm way torn. CO has so much (land-wise) , but too, I just want to make our life more simple for The Wife so she can tend to "the kids." Ya know??

I'm a 20+ year hardware PC/proto-type design engineer, The Wife is a 20+ yr IT manager. We've some experience in doing other things & we just want to bail to a more friendly area.

Famliy aspects dictate that we move to the (somewhat) Hattisburg area, but would like to modify that move to the best bang for the buck ....

Damnitall!, ... I can get into it, but the X-fer from CO to back south seems so strange....

Grew up in Bossier City, LA & did a 10-year stint in south Miami & The Keys - I can{/I] live down south, but I am so way torn, folks. (Gawd! if nothing else, there's the stnkin' bugs & the heat & the humidity & the ....

The Move seems very likely. We must do this To Save The Family & other stuff, but .....

Please talk me into it.

Hattiesburg has become one of those key retirement cities . The place has grown quite a bit since I was at U.S.M. back in the bronze age.
The bugs, heat etc. are all still here and we now have West Nile Virus to contend with as well. :D

& that would be a sad thing, Larry. :(

Drove to town this eveing & had to stop for about 30 elk - standing in the road not a mile from the house.

Yesterday AM, we had 5 bull elk in the front yard ... & this after skunking out for the true elk hunt in a wilderness area .... go figure.

Doubt there's many elk in Mississippi ....

labgrade, I grew up in Bossier City (you a former Air Force brat?) as well--and now find myself living in the Fla. Panhandle. Have also lived in the Meridian, Miss. area. So here's my take on it:

Better hunting in Mississippi, better fishing in Fla. plus no state taxes. Not much difference in cost of living IMO. Weather in Fla. Panhandle & S. Miss. pretty much the same; hurricanes a possibility in both places. Mild winters are payback for brutal summers. As mentioned previously, both areas are gun-friendly. Mississippi's public education system, from what I gather, is among the nation's worst. Florida's is somewhat better. Not sure about the technology job market in either place. Overall, from what I've seen the economy is much stronger in Florida.

Just my opinion, worth everything you paid for it.

I vote for panhandle of Florida!!!!!!! We try to go there once a year on vacation and it is the place I would like to wind up later in life. Fresh and saltwater fishing, gun friendly, lots of wild game, and the beach all rolled up in one. I kinda like Jackson MS too, but it's not the panhandle.

Just my 2 cents

What am I taking about? I'd love to live there now, but circumstances will not permit it at this time.

Been all over the south. Except for sales tax on groceries and state income tax THE absolute best retirement town IMHO is Ocean Springs Mississippi. Second best would be Pensacola (number one if not paying taxes on groceries is a priority). Third best would be Fairhope Alabama. Distant fourth would be New Orleans, but you've really got to like alcohol and wall to wall people and shabby-chic to live there. Pass Christian (pronounced "past Kristy Anne") is not bad.

Lots of other places on the coast are like total armpits however. Prichard Alabama comes to mind as does Pascagoula Mississippi and Bossier City Louisiana. Zero on a scale of one to 100 has to be Baton Rouge. Gulf coast can really fool you. You think a place is really great then you find you've rented an apartment on a toxic waste dump.

I always thought Pensacola fit into the total armpit category myself, but it's been a while since I was there. Military installations generally attract the worst sort of elements in the camp followers who work in and patronize the strip and gin joints that service the servicemen on pass.

MeekandMild I actually grew up, off and on, down the road from Fairhope, in Spanish Fort, and my Father is from around Prichard, And you are right on both counts. I used to love his stories about hearing a knock on the door and opening it to have a man with a screwdriver in his back fall into the house, or his next door neighbor friend complaining that he couldn't keep a baseball bat 'cause his dad kept breaking them on people's heads. Of course those stories are the reason I never felt compelled to go to Prichard.

"(you a former Air Force brat?) "

Yup - my whole life - seems like & an AF-weenie myself later on.

Remember in early '60s the U2s takin' off at Barksdale & everyone saying they never saw 'em ..... ;)

One thing I'd very much like to do is dig a hole without hitting hard rock. (sigh) Even digging out our own water line, we hit sandstone rock - we can't dig a hole at all - a fence here is rediculous.

Elk in the front yard is pretty cool - no doubt - but I'm way ready for some sandy soil somehow.

& The Wife needs her children close - it's high time, huh?......a safe place, minimal disturbances, & .......... frankly, I'm all for sandy soil somehow.

I cannot believe we're (planning on) leaving Colorado, but at the same time, ......

pretty torn up here .....

Pensacola would be a good choice.

Pensacola would be a good location. (I've been here since 1980.) Yes, there are some places I prefer to avoid at night, but for the most part, the Escambia County Sheriff's Dept. does a good job. The Navy bases are a major part of Naval Aviation training, so the funding keeps things pretty much up-to-date and all the military sure helps the local economy.

I've lived in the FL panhandle all my life & still can't stand the summers (remember, it's the humidity not the heat that gets you). The few times I've been to the Smoky Mtns, it has been great, and we've always toyed with the idea of living in the hills somewhere. For that reason, I probably am not qualified to advise you to leave CO and all the elk.

I think the cost of living is good here, but I personnally think we pay too much for natural gas, water, and garbage pickup. Anyway Hattiesburg would be approx. 2½ hours away by car & I think it would be Interstate & 4-lane highway the entire trip.

Regards, fiVe

There are some towns with good and bad attributes, like Bayou la Batre Alabama and an unnamed little place on 98 just on the Florida side of the state line and the little town north of Pascagoula, Escatawba, Mississippi. I think that a good way of picking places to look would be to talk to the locals and not trust chamber of commerce brochures.

An interesting thing about Mobile. If you go up to the restaraunt on top of the biggest building in town and look out to the north all you can see is public housing. If you look to the south there are shipyards. Must be the two biggest industries in the area, shipping and raising welfare babies. Al Gore country if you know what I mean.

North Alabama is where its at.......Beautiful Mountains, Great People, Gun Friendly, High-Paying Jobs out the Wazoo, Low cost of living, Good shooting Ranges, etc..etc...
I've lived in Central AL. (Montgomery), South Alabama (Dothan) and compared to those 2 locations, North AL. is AWESOME!!!!!!

Check it out!!!!
