McCarthy to Introduce Assault Weapons Ban Next Week

This won't go anywhere, but McCarthy sure is a one-woman band on the AWB thing. Might have to be a shoulder thing that goes up.

It really is irritating to me with all thats going on with the country and world today, there are these 'jobsworths' working behind the scenes trying to make themselves important to further their own careers.

I'm thinking this will go nowhere in the current climate.

If it gets introduced, I'm glad it's by McCarthy.

It's easy to make her look REALLY stupid, because she IS really stupid.

In the age of YouTube, ABC and CBS can't suppress the video, either.

For any too lazy to type out a lengthy email, this is what I sent to my reps:

Hello sir,

It has recently come to my attention that:

Carolyn McCarthy of New York is again trying to introduce gun legislation.

"I think the assault weapons bill will be a test," McCarthy said Wednesday in an interview.

Is it really the right time to be focusing on second tier issues like this?

While yes I am pro gun, I am also concerned when special interests like this take a front seat in a time of economic struggle and war.

I vote in my representatives to take care of the larger issues, not to bicker of things like this.

I am not the only one who feels very irritated by people like this Mcarthy forcing their own special agendas and special interests in to the political process, while much heavier issues loom.

Even if your rep is an rabid anti gun liberal, they have people who take note of emails like this for their own internal polls and campaigning.

They are exactly the people who need emails like this written to them, so they think twice about introducing legislation.

Really I think it is best to kick these people when they are down, not let them do stupid tests like this especially as kwanger said, I don't care where you fall on the issue, they need to focus on other things at this point.

I love these antis.
In a time where threats to our nation are more plentiful.
From with-in by criminals and outside by terrorist and
gangs from south of the border...
THEY want to ban our ability as a nation, to defend ourselves.

I think it's high time it impeach politicians who swore an oath
to uphold the constitution, yet break that very oath the moment they are in office.

These people are treasonous and should be treated as enemies of the people.

This is why we should push congress to pass a law that states that if a law is deemed to violate constitutional rights, those who voted for the law should face felony charges. Or, even on the state level this could be effective. Essentially, by passing such laws, the law makers are guaranteeing that rights will be infringed on the public. Maybe this would fix the problem of the legislators doing whatever they want and the public having to wait years or decades to have the court decide it's not lawful, and then have no penalties for those enacting the laws (as it is, when someone wins a civil rights case, the tax payers pay for it - but why should my tax money be used for compensation, when the perpetrators were the legislators who voted for the bill that infringed on the right?)

I know, fat chance, but stranger things have happened if you're persistent.

Rep. McCarthy introduces this bill in every Congress and in every Congress, it gets shuttled off to a sub-Committee and therein it resides until the end of that Congress. Thus it dies and the process starts up with the new Congress.

I would refer readers of this forum to the Library of Congress' site for "Thomas" (as in Jefferson. . .) the Congressional Research service. You can search for any bill or resolution that was introduced in the House or Senate. Legislation can be searched from the 101st Congress through the current Congress, the 111th.

Putting in the research terms "McCarthy guns" I came back with the following bills and resolutions. I then searched for the legislative status of the bills and found that all were introduced and referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary, sub-committee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. There they died. No hearings, no statements from the Floor, no nothing. They died in committee.

Before we get our panties in a bunch, let's reserve our ire for legislation that actually has a chance of being acted upon.

The following are the results of the first 44 pieces of legislation that had Rep. McCarthy's name attached to them. The lady has the right to introduce legislation in the House that interests her. Given what happened to her and her family, I suspect that she has an honest interest in this type of legislation. I really cannot blame her.

However if it's something that the Democratic leadership has learned it is that they are going to suffer a major beat-down if they try to get behind any gun legislation. The Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the Majority Leader of the Senate, Senator Reid, have both made is abundently clear (time and again) that they are not going to address gun legislation in this Congress.

Here's part of the list of Rep. McCarthy's bills:

Hello Mr. DeFazio,

I voted for you due to your continuing support of the 2nd Amendment,as well as your willingness to take care of the larger issues, not to bicker over things like this.

It would be heartwarming to see yourself and your fellow representatives censure Mrs. McCarthy for her repeated attacks on our Constitution, can this happen?

I am not the only one who feels very irritated by people like this Mcarthy forcing their own special agendas and special interests in to the political process, while much heavier issues loom.

I'd love to see a transcipt or even a video of when
Rep. McCarthy was sworn into office.

I bet it states somewhere in the oath
'to uphold the Constitution of the United States'.

These people are indeed enemies of the state and need to be removed from office immediately and tried for treason.

I will send the following letter, to be sure, to my "Representative" (I use the term in the loosest possible manner), but I doubt very much it will sway his pre-formulated lib opinion.

Permission by all means given to reprint and use the following on a politician who might actually listen.

Dear Rep. XXXXX:

It has been brought to my attention that Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of New York has expressed her intent to introduce yet another iteration of the defunct "Assault Weapon Ban" as early as next week in the House. In the face of indisputable statistical evidence compiled by the FBI in the years following its adoption, the original legislation was proved a spectacular failure in its ostensible purpose to reduce violent crime. It did, however, successfully run afoul of the protections any intellectually honest interpretation of the Second Amendement would afford.

I am dismayed that some in the Congress, faced with national issues of such exigency as the faltering economy and resurgent Islamic extremism, would choose to occupy themselves with frivolous endeavors that can only be favorably described as political posturing.

I will not support any candidate for reelection that embraces "gun control" or any inititative designed to obstruct the lawful exercise of our Second Amendment rights. I urge you respectfully to reject Rep. McCarthy's proposal, and all similar efforts that may arise.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

I realize that McKooky introduces this every year--but that doesn't mean we should stop fighting it. An AWB only has to be passed once and it probably won't contain a sunset provision this time.

I'm pretty sure you'll find out that the NFA laws weren't brand new ideas when they passed.

I'll say one more time that THR is a preaching to the Choir place as far as this issue goes. But in reality the vast majority of Americans don't give any thought to the AW controversy. Yeah many on here have a vested interest in shooting but in day to day life how many people do you encounter that don't own a gun or don't own anything that isn't for hunting. I know a large amount of Hunters that see no reason for high cap mags etc...Some are family members and I bang my head against the wall every time I talk to them. These folks are Vets and in a couple cases distinguished vets from WWII and Vietnam who think only the Army needs weapons like these.

i wonder if it's an NRA-activist who makes this AWB legislation. Did it occur to any of you that by adding such random items to the AWB as barrel shrouds and the such that it makes any AWB legislation look like a joke...
but maybe that's just my paranoid-optimist in me

This is what will happen,

McC will introduce this in a press conference along with the usual suspects.

The perennials few will be co-sponsors, many from CA, NY, NJ, MA etc

There will be the tears of how this is for the children

The NRA and GOA will both email everyone and sundry saying how this is an outrage and we need money to fight it. Contrubute NOW (or else will be the underlying theme)

The bill will be referrered to the House Committee on the Judiciary who will wash their hands by passing it to the relevant sub committee

The bill will settle down and co-habit with HR45 where it will die by being ignored to death.

Periodically there will be yet another OUTRAGEOUS, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WE MUST FIGHT IT posting on THR, for about 2 years.

In the 112th Congress McC will re-introduce it again.

It's been more than two weeks since McCarthy stated that she was going to introduce a new AWB. In that time we just had a nice piece of gun legislation passed and signed. I do have to wonder if the powers that be told McCarthy to shut up and keep it on the back burner...

Sorry but political office is not to be used for a personal crusade. It is used to represent the people. Now if the people in her district want gun legislation, its her duty to comply.

Those who elected her by feeling sorry for her loss should have their voter ID card revoked and not allowed to vote again.

Given what happened to her family, passing more legislation to disarm the people only results in more deaths by those crimminals who will not give up their guns. Some memorial to her dead husband and wounded kid.

She is the prime example of what is wrong with our political representation in this country.

I never read anything about her family members being shot. When did this happen. I have only read and watched a woman that is an embarrassment to her fellow legislators.

1993. Her husband and son were shot during the Long Island Railroad thing by Colin Ferguson.

http://www.nytimes.com/1993/12/08/nyregion/gunman-kills-5-on-lirr-train-19-are-wounded.html

Now, the sad part of this story is that since there were no armed citizens Ferguson had time to RELOAD THREE TIMES and keep shooting until someone finally stopped him.

But, rather than go into politics to help people protect themselves she went into politics to "get even" with the big bad evil gun.

She also sued Olin and is part of the reason they dropped the "Black Talon" name. Of course, it was the bullets fault. The fact that Ferguson was completely insane had nothing to do with it.

It's a shame what happened but the woman has not done one single thing to prevent it from happening to someone else.

And she's made "assault weapons" her pet project even though crimes involving those types of weapons are practically non-existent.

Interestingly enough, what happened to McCarthy is almost identical to what happened to Suzanna Hupp in Texas (Luby's shooting in Killeen.) Yet, their reactions were totally opposite, as Hupp became an advocate for concealed carry.

Remember, everything costs political capital. Does the current crop of Democrats want to spend theirs on social welfare programs or on silly "feel good" gun legislation that makes a lot of people really mad and does nothing to reduce criminals' access to weapons? If 1994 is any indication, AWB 2.0 would cost a lot of political capital.

The 'law' you are talking about is supposed to be the 10th amendment, but it has been deemed ignorable for many years now :(
