Mid Priced Usable Folder

I love my Spyderco Manix 2. Took a little break-in and it's now VERY fast to open and close one-handed. Very solid. I even carried it in my wedding :)

I liked the physical description of the Manix Series but coming in at over 5 ounces, it is more than I want to heft on a daily basis. I already have that weight base covered.

I will keep it on my short list though.

Well I have seen many folders for over five thousand dollars, that would make a mid price folder $2,500. Guess it is all in what you consider a high end knife. :)

I just bought a Zero Tolerance 0350. A bit on the heavy side, but I'm thoroughly impressed with it so far. A bit pricey at just over 100.00 including shipping. I had trouble finding a dealer that had one in stock, but it was worth the effort and $$.

Perhaps I should have qualified or even eliminated the "mid price" words and stuck with the give or take $100 mark. Point taken. Unless I was collecting I would be hard pressed to spend over $200 for a knife so $100 to me is mid range.

these two knives are the Spyderco Centofante 3 and the Ontario Rat 1 folder. Both can be had for under $45. The Centofante is great for EDC very light weight but the blade is thin so i would stay away from heavy duty work with it. The Rat 1 is a bit heavier and wider and great for any type of work as long as you dont mind the added weight. I actually just picked up the Rat 1 for $32. You dont have to spend $100 for a great knife.

The more I use my paramilitary 2 the more I like it. I would say if you like the choil on the native that lets you choke up to do fine work, you'll like the PM2.

The PM2 also has an amazing full belly blade, curves the whole way - but not a recurve type that's hard to sharpen, just a subtle belly.

See? It just never quite stops curving and becomes flat, which makes it 10x more useful.

The digi cam is just sexy and I think the "more handle than blade" a la Military and PM2 lets you have the reach and heft of a bigger knife without the liability and difficulty of controlling a big blade.

I really like the compression lock too, it's like the best parts of a liner lock and an axis lock, combined.

Benchmade Griptillian, thumb hole in blade for opening. I actually hold the lock studs back, and then flip it open for speed. I have carried one for years now, and have always been satisfied. It sharpens up easy enough, and has been used for gutting hogs, deer, snakes, etc., in addition to cutting lots of rope, cord, boxes, tape, plastic sheet, you name it. I have several, and a few of the mini version. Never had any problems.

native's a good choice.

keep your eyes peeled on ebay and you can find some decent prices on used knives. I was buying a knife every 6 months for quite some time and needed to contain costs. I picked up a benchmade 940 on there for $75 a while back, and that is my favorite knife. I keep looking for something I like better, but haven't found anything in 6 years. I also like the BM 530, nitrous stryker, mini grip, spyderco centofante, delica, and native. I want to like the manix2, but it's just too heavy for me. I don't need or use big beefy knives.

actually my second most carried knife is a gerber EAB. not fancy at all, but it's nice to have something you can use without worrying about the blade.

You guys talking about heavy Manix 2s may be interested to know there is a clear blue linerless manix 2 coming out that weighs 2.5 oz or so.

...and it's still incredibly strong, just under Spyderco 's heaviest-duty rating. :)

Since you're a Gerber fan and all, are you Mil or LEO? or do you have a good connect?

I'd highly recommend a G06 auto Gerber, it'll run you about $170 and is a bit heavier, but it may be the last knife you ever buy, been my EDC for past 3 years. They have some with lighter weight G10 handles but the weight of it and the thrust you get from opening it is just awesome.
