More people buying ammo instead of another gun?

I think many people are hoarding and reselling. Dealing in guns requires licensing (cost), risk, and very low profit margin, a few bucks on most guns. Guns are traced through serial numbers. Dealing in ammo and necessary accessories like magazines is simple. Can be shipped to your door. Huge profit margins. No licensing. Huge demand. Doesn't take long for people to figure this out, hoard, and resell.

Personally, I believe that S did H the F when it comes to gun owners. We have endured a roller coaster of serious fluctuations in prices and availability of guns, mags, ammo, and accessories, with no end in sight.

During, and even after the AWB expired, I wanted to ensure I never got caught short. I took to heart the saying buy cheap and stack deep.

I find buying guns right now cheaper than buying ammo. With what scalpers are charging for 22RF I just picked up a nice used Remington 870 20 gauge with a fixed full choke. Shooting has become extremely expensive.
I still look for deals and closeouts returns at big box stores to get components down to tolerable levels.
At least I can find free brass and shotgun hulls left behind at various ranges.

I know everyone keeps talking about 9mm and .22 being so hard to find and that people are selling at hording prices, I say get you a .45 ACP because that doesn't seem to be affected by the price and for the money I'll take .45 ACP for $20 a box over paying $20-$25 a box of 9mm

I got caught behind the 8 ball on 22 ammo. :banghead:
Luckily I, with no fore thought, found a guy getting out of hand loading/reloading altogether a couple years ago and scored big in the powder dept for both shotgun and pistol.

I will still buy a pound or two of pistol powder when I can find it. I'm not getting caught short, ever again.
Guns? Maybe another 9mm if I find something I like. I'm more apt to buy reloading supplies than guns right now.

I love love love looking at and buying ammo. A habit I've almost broken because I reload and really dont need anymore. Still love to look..and still having to talk myself out of buying.

I have reduced my inventory to 3 firearms and could not be happier. The only ammo I'm buying now is 1oz slugs @ 1300 to 1350fps. Love to shoot those out of my Wingmaster. I see 9x19 ammo is pretty affordable now 50 pack of Federal HST @ $29 and 500 rounds of Speer FMJs (the best ball ammo available) @ $169.

I have been in a consolidation mode for the last few years. I sat down and figured out what calibers I thought I could reasonably support and decided to get out of the rest. So if its not in one of the calibers listed below, I have been looking to sell it off. Some of the calibers are not as important to me as others. I don't shoot a lot of 38Spl,357Mag, 44Mag, 30-06 or 380Acp.

380Acp
9mm
40S&W
38spl
357mag
45Acp
44Mag

5.56mm
5.45x39mm
7.62x39mm
7.62 Nato
30-06Springfield

Anything I have bought has either been an upgrade (Sold my no name AR and bought a nice Colt 6920MP) or if its new would have to be in one of the above calibers. I have also been adding to the reloading components when I can find a deal on them.

I have sold off all my stocks of ammo in the calibers below and the guns that go with them. I still have a few of the rifle's to get rid of but they will be on the market soon.:)
50BMG
8mm Mauser
9mm Makarov
7.62x25

Except for 9x19, .44Mag, 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 everything else could be sold. I now have two handguns and a shotgun. The reason I have two handguns is because 10mm handgun is just too large for deep concealment therefore 9x19 is a must have.

One regret is not pursuing a low cost Saiga 5.45 and lots of this ammo Before the Russian invasion of the Crimea and its recent "training maneuvers".
This could switch more demand back to 7.62x39?
The ATF apparently has not yet made a final ruling about 5.45 importation, even though imported steel core 5.45 is being held up. They cover this at SKSboards under Ammo.

When I buy more 7.62x39-if those prices remain stable-it will be for Red Army Standard ammo, because it is manufactured in Ukraine, as a small gesture of support for the 'underdog'. Still .22-.25/rd. and widely available on "Gunbot".

I bought my sister a revolver for christmas, but had to pay a small ransom for ammo for it. I'm looking for powder and primers so I can keep the case lots unused and reload what I shoot.

Keep in mind that the ban as proposed will only ban the steel core surplus ammo. The Golden Tiger, Wolf Mil Classic, Red Army Standard and others will still be importable. Not as cheap but still available.

Ya, I could get by with just a rifle caliber and 9mm. But it wouldn't be as much fun. I like to have a bit of diversity so to speak. Most of the listed over lap in the reloading department (Not 44Mag though, that's just for big bore fun). The over lap makes stocking reloading supplies a bit easier. And with the calibers listed I think it would cover most makes or models in one way or another.

The shotgun is a definite. Also like a Marlin Model 60 .22 cal., then 9mm pistol and carbine.

All the rest is optional (IMHO).

Always need more guns and ammo.

How many guns can I shoot, I have 7. Since it's just me, that's plenty. All are 9mm or 45. Long guns, are 12 gauge and 223, I need more ammo, shot 200 rounds for the first time in months and it hurt, because now I have to find more.

I've took a pledge sometime ago against "impulse" gun purchases. I have too few dollars these days to be indiscriminate in how I spend them. Each new gun now is part of a general plan in a chambering I already have ammo for. I made a decision to stick with firearms in chambering's that were practical for my needs and economical to shoot. I also decided not to own more guns than will comfortably fit in my safe. I don't need one of everything to be happy, just the tools I need to do the shooting I'm interested in. As it's just me shooting, sometimes with a friend, beyond a certain number, the guns will end up just sitting in my safe anyway, so I feel in no way deprived.

Ammo on the other hand may sit awhile, but will eventually be shot. I purchased my dream O/U shotgun the summer before the panic, a long anticipated purchase that I'm very happy with, but now looking back, I wish I would have invested the funds in ammo instead and put the shotgun purchase off. Guns, especially something like an O/U, are widely available now after a brief interruption. Ammo not so much. Live & learn.

Guns for me this year (so far), though that will probably change as I've got a little man on the way. Bought a PSA AR-15 with my "fun portion" of my bonus. Then bought myself a Single Six convertible as a "promotion present" to myself. Doesnt hurt that he Single Six can make good use of .22lr.... a little bit goes a long way when you have to think about every shot and load / eject rounds one by one. That said, Im in pretty good shape on ammo for my other guns as far as Im concerned. I will probably gradually increase my ammo store as funds allow, but I wont stop shooting to do so.

Not here. Guns are priced right at the moment - ammo is not. That's how I spend my money.

Willdbillz: Quite true, about the temporary or even longer-term ban on the so-called "armor-piercing" variety.

Even though at first I had no idea what "7N6" was, the public perception seems to be that the ban already did, or easily could (in the future, because some of it it is Russian) include common non-corrosive 5.45 ammo.

I wonder how much ammo get's discarded by aging widows, when their spouse passes on?
I remember as a kid when my uncle died, they had no idea what the guns or ammo were worth, my aunt sold them for peanuts, and if I told you some of the names you would get sick. I got the 22 Browning in grade 3, but there were Pietro Baretta Shotguns and other guns that are worth a fortune now. This was 55 years ago. I bet it still goes on unless someone in the family knows better.

Guns Before Ammo ?

Since the price of .22 ammo is high or not available now, I've noticed a certain handgun being available at a much cheaper price.

How wise do you (anybody) think it would be to buy the gun, hoping the ammo problem will be better later?

I'd say that's a no-brainer. .22 LR ammo WILL be back. Folks just have really short memories. If there's a gun you like and you see a good price, pick it up. No worries about the ammo, unless you can't stand to wait just a bit.
