Made by and for illiterate peasants....kicks like a mule....ugly beyond belief...steel butt plate....short stocks.....just another commie weapon...

That's its charm. The Mosin is a commoner's weapon. It gets the job done with no frills, at the absolute lowest price. It works in any environment, with minimal upkeep.

How else could you arm your entire neighborhood for 1200 bucks? You can (or at least could a year ago) purchase a crate of twenty 91/30s for $60 per rifle. You can't say that for any other firearm in existence.

I have a buddy who was ambivalent about Mosins. He had handled them at gun shows but never fired one.

3 months ago, I took my 91/30 to the range and he shot it until his shoulder gave out. Since them, he's bought a 91/30, an M38, and a Finnish M39. He loves the ugly things!

My shooting buddy is a Mauser addict and Enfield admirer, and felt the Mosin was less than worthy of much enthusiasm, but after I finished my 91/30 sporter, we began working up handloads. My eyes were going through a fuzzy spell, so he did the shooting, and was very impressed. Now he's talking of getting one for himself.

love em, every should have atleast one to arm a friend for deer hunting or matches. around 100 bucks for a good deer rifle aint bad at all, good back up deer rifle.

I am thinking of a good mule deer/ elk rifle should I get a MN or a good 7mm?
thanks

I like my Mosin BECAUSE it is cheap, and because I don't really care what happens to it. But yah, if Mosins cost $500, I wouldn't own one. I'd collect Swedish Mausers in 6.5x55 for that price.

Recently acquired my first MN. Could not be happier !

I really want to see that thing bench rested.

This is one of my more average groups:

March27sightinscored.jpg

It was done with a modified front sight and smoothed barrel channel lined with oiled rubberized cork gasket material.

Fitted with a new trigger group and an ergonomic stock, those silly Finns keep winning medals with theirs!

Regards,

Josh

P.S. I'm seriously thinking about finding a lead sled for this. I can't shoot as well as it can. J.S.

You are right Joshua, the M-39 is a much better shooter than the Russian MN. It's all in the barrel. :)

I love em so much I wish Russia would produce more of them imagine getting a fresh off the line Mosin Nagant that isn't gooped with cosmoline ( The devils sweat ). Tho the history of them is pretty appealing too.

I want one.....its in my price range.

Just need to find someplace in my area... and a decent pick

It is what it is. If im out cutting wood or working on my property and need a rifle that i can lay in the bed of the truck or lean against a stump, this is the tool for me. Don't have to worry about the finish or if its gonna get dirty or not. Black bears beware.

Mosins are awesome. Why does there need to be a thread dedicated to those that dislike it? Seems kind of odd to me.

"--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I keep seeing thread after thread of Mosin Nagant love.

I just don't get it. Yeah, it was cheap to own and shoot, but that was the only thing it had going for it. And, yes - I am speaking from first-hand experience. Owned one, hated it.

The stock didn't fit me.
The bolt was incredibly hard to work.
Trigger pull was approximately 30 pounds.
Accuracy was minute-of-pizza box at 25 yards.
Gun kicked like a constipated mule. Yeah, call me a weenie but my arm twitched for 2 days after 40 rounds.

Mosin Nagant owner jokes aside (http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinHumor.htm) and unless you consider it a personal howitzer, I have to ask...am I the only one who doesn't care for this gun, no matter how cheap it is?"\

To answer your question. yes, you are the only one who doesnt like them.
STock didnt fit you, you are either to big, or to tiny.
Bolt was incredibly hard to work. Must be the to tiny part.
Trigger pull was aproximately 30 lbs. See above.
Moa of a pizza box at 25 yds. Now, that could just be you are a horrible shooter, or a terrible shooter with a rifle barrel thats crapped out.
Kicked like a mule. See above.

Either way, mosins are awesome.

To add to this. Yes im just giving you a hard time. I think you have to be a guy that loves any and all guns. The mosin is cheap, reliable shooter. They just are fun.

Noisy Maggot oops, Mosin-Nagant aesthetics, etc.

Where do I join this fray? No, it is not to be compared to a Mauser, P-14 Enfield, Or just about any other firearm made in the last two centuries for beauty, function, ..... However my late brother got this hack job for me and therefore it is precious. It will kill anything it is properly used upon, relatively cheaply, and is very likely to still shoot again. Mud or whatever may come along. I, in my ignorant youth, passed on an absolutely prime example of a well sporterized P-14 303 Enfield for $125. This rifle is my punishment for that ignorance.

My brother bought this for me, and shot a buck at 5, yes 5, yards within a week before my arrival to pick it up. He was already weak from his pancreatic cancer and nodded off. Blind reflex shot as he woke up. He shot another at about 100 a day later. Both fell dead in a few steps, and had ribs on both sides powdered as the 203 grainer passed through. I was told the one at five yards had powder residue on it, which is likely since it has a 20 inch barrel and these little rascals shoot fire at night you have to see to believe.

I have already found parts to doll this bugly thing to near beauty for what a new low end rifle will cost. One piece at a time for a few years and it will be okay and Jon would be proud.

Kick, yes, and I have too many patches in this body to shoot it all day long. The heavy stock, muzzle brake, and pad will tame it to keep my neck plate in place.

And at least it is now on my side of the creek.

Bkhudmon, i was hoping to see a pic...

Im the same way. I was given my gun by someone. Not worth 100 bucks, but i love the damn thing.

OOPS

Oh yes, the short stiff bolt and 30 pound trigger pull keep you from firing it unless you mean it, really mean it. Like my old .38 derringer, I could not seem to shoot myself in the backside while it was in my pocket and only when scared or ticked off could I both hold on to it and pull the stiff trigger at the same time!!

It is fun to take a 100 year old rifle, that you paid less than 100 bucks for to the range and outshoot a guy with the latest 1000 dollar wonder gun. Priceless......chris3

well I love the fact that I can continually outshoot a rem-chester-by with a $79 rifle. With just some minor tweaks and about 1/2hr of work they can be amazing. I actually got asked to write a little book on accurizing them, slicking the action and basic trigger tweaks. Here is a 10 shot group at 100 doing some load testing last time I was home, I was shooting for groups not dialing. I was just seeing if a load was worthy of mass producing. I dont care who you are or what you shoot but that is a respectable group. And it makes me feel even better knowing that the gun costs about the same as a bb gun.
