Our forces first met the Mosin rifles in combat in Korea. Then in jungles of Vietnam. Then in the deserts of Afghanistan as we speak. Used by Afghan snipers , even enfield rifles were found. NOt numerous in numbers compared to Aks etc.

Minor correction. Our forces first faced mosins in 1918 in the Polar Bear expedition.

Polar Bear Expedition

5000 US troops armed with Remington-made M91's that were originally intended for the Czar before the revolution.

But, yes, our first major conflict against mosin equipped foes was Korea.

Thats right - ANREF (American North Russian Expeditionary Force) were rearmed with Mosin 1891 rifles, while the AEF Siberia went into Vladivostok with 1903 Springfield rifles.

There are also photos of the British continent that went into northern Russia, also armed with Mosin 1891 rifles. Both the British contingent and ANREF were re-equipped in the UK before heading into now-Soviet Russia.

It's an $80 piece of WWII history.... Who cares about accuracy and everything thing else that people don't like about'em.. Mosin's rock! More for ME!!:D

Ordering one Monday. $89 plus shipping and FFL transfer. Will be nice to own a piece of history. How will it shoot, will let you know.

The U.S. Army adopted the Mosin Nagant as The Modle of 1916 our first "M-16", as a Training/TerritorialGuard/Federal Prison rifle from those Remington and New England Westinghouse manufactured Mosins intended but undeliverd to the Russian Tzar.
The "Polar Bear Expedition" was armed with Mosin Nagant rifles.

I have one, with "U.S." and Ord Bomb stamps all over it.
Payed 120$ for it and almost gave it away, untill the internet made me smart enough to keep it ..........so much info.......

I have some sniper rifles. Love 'em. If I had to choose between the 1903A4 Springfield with a miserable Weaver M73 or a Moisin-Nagant with a PE or PU, I'll take the Moisin-Nagant.

You mosin nagant haters really should get one and have some fun with them, like charging the oncoming facsist watermelons and killing them with the 20ft bayonet,:D or loaning yours to a buddy just to have it come back and have been run over by a road grader :banghead: (still shoots just has a few cosmetic issues) or use it to drive in nails or to play baseball with the mosin for a bat, or my personal favorite pull a bullet and start a campfire with one.

Great shot here of US infantry with their issued Mosin 1891 rifles

Eh, I was thinking of buying one AFTER reading this thread. :)

Do you think the Finnish M39 models are THAT much better than the regular M91/30? The Finnish are about $350 and the Russians are around $100. Is the fit, finish or accuracy 3x better?

I find this thread humorous.

If someone does not like a Mosin Nagant rifle, then DON'T BUY ONE.

Last time I checked no one is forcing anyone to get one.

I own 5 and love them. I know in a SHTF scenario those rifles will work and if I run out of ammo, I will beat the enemy with it.

I have owned Mosin's that could not hit the side of a barn door, some that are very good w/ iron sights and one that is a sub MOA Mosin w/ a scope. All depends on what you have and how you shoot it.

If you want to shoot full power .30 caliber cartridge, the mosin is perfect. Then you can handle the bigger boomers like 7 mm Rem Mag and 300 WM.

lol, i find the nagant much more hrrmmm......irritating then the 7mm or 300. Short stock coupled with small steel plate, and fairly hot round (handloaded 174s at 2650fps), is about as much "fun" as i can like.

I think, and though I'm not going to read through all the posts again, that the majority of the posters in this thread like the Mosin compared to those that don't, lol.

ETA: and there's the poll above... Forgot about that... Shows clearly that there are more likes than dislikes, lol!

I really like them......when sporterized and a new stock!!! I really dislike shooting them the way they come.

Come on! Real men dance with who brung ya! I don't know what that has to do with rifles, but I'm sure it's much more profound now than it will be in the morning. :)

I've got another M44 on layaway at a local pawn shop and plans to buy an M39, Hex Tula 91/30, and an M38 if I can find one next year. I need to get at least one pre-1929 receiver in the bunch.

I don't think they are the greatest rifles ever, but for a c note and cheap 30 cal ammo, I'll buy as many as the wife'll let me and shoot minute of venison all day long. I'm not an AR guy, so it's all about personal preference.

The collectors drive the Finn market, if you are not wanting a finnish rifle and are just wanting a good shooter you are paying for something that you really don't need.

Look for a nice rifle with a good bore.

I don't think they are the best rifle by a long shot, not even the best WWI or WWII rifle. But they did have a LONG service life, and the cartridge even longer.

They are fun for what they are, and I agree a more inexpensive deer rifle does not exist. If you want to get into hunting and don't want to think twice about dinging it up in the woods nothing is better for the price.

All this talk about MNs made me think that I hadn't had a chance to fire a round through mine since 2004! :uhoh: Well, I went out this evening and fired a few rounds through my 91/30 and either I had on super fleece that soaked up scads of recoil, the recoil really isn't that bad or maybe superior genetics on my part :D but I didn't have a problem with it. I do remember that my M44 was a total tack driver and right on the money with the bayonet extended but would shift to the left about an inch at 100 meters with it folded. I have to go to the DMV tomorrow so I'll be looking to vent a bit afterwards! :banghead: I might have to drag out the Nagant collection, crank up the Leningrad Cowboys, put on the rabbit fur bomber "Ivan hat" and have some fun blasting away with the cheap ammo! Hmm, might have to buy a bottle of vodka to complete the whole ambiance.
