mossberg 24"slugster "smoothbore,barrell question.

well i traded into a mossberg 500a dual barrell kit new in a box today.anyway both barrells are ported 28" and 24" the 24" says slugster on it and it is a smoothbore ,not rifled ,with rifle sights,doublechecked,ok i know i can shoot slugs through it but i can shoot buckshot too,correct? so i wont have to buy a short security barrell.thanks.

thanks i thought i was ok, i was just wondering about the buckshot moving past those ports,also i thought all slugster barrells were threaded internally,but mine is a smoothebore.anyways thanks.

Shotguns' rifled barrels are intended for sabot slugs rather. Normal slugs should be shot through smoothbore barrels.

They have 18-1/2" ported Open Cylinder barrels as well for security. You are DEFINITELY able to use that 24" for buckshot, however...

Note you have no screw-in choke for shot of any kind. Now, slugs and buckshot may like a tinge of choke, but the lack of it limits using the 24" for hunting with even big shot to relativley short woodland (and coincidently defensive) ranges. Ideal at 15 meters. 30 yards max IMO (w/standard 2-3/4" shells).

For defense in and around the home? The only reason my Browning HighPower and I went out to buy my first 18-1/2" Mossberg barrel to celebrate the Rodney King verdict was because we couldn't find my own 24" Slugster around the house when I needed it. You used to be able to fold-down that rear sight too...

If you hunt, you bought what I'd consider to be the best shotgun combo buy on the market. Has been for many, many years I feel. And you didn't need to pay for someone's NASCAR raceteam or Saturday infomercial to figure it out either -- good for you!

As for the porting holes, any of your shot loads whateversize, will still be in the shot cup as it passes the ports, and probably will for another 15-20ft. too. I'm a big Mossberg fan ,also.
