I want a shot gun for self defense which would be the better choice, I live out of town in rural area.

Your personal preference should rule. You're going to have to hold a sample of each and see how they feel to you.

I love my Mossberg 590. Put a M16 bayonet on it because I can.

I like the siaga but I dont think I've gotten past the coolness factor of it. truth be told, I'm really not sure about the overall length of this AK shotty.

my oppinion is only really worth a 1/2 cent(which is sometimes worth more).

like other people said, you have to handle both before you decide.

I own a few shotguns. Among those that I would use for self-defense are the Mossberg 500 Persuader, Saiga-12 and Remington 870.

I have not fired a Mossberg 590, however I have fired the "Maverick" - and my 500. I am a fan of them both.

Since you asked only about the Mossberg and the Saiga and have determined that you only want to consider one or the other, I would recommend the Mossberg 590 - and let me tell you why.

I'm sure you would agree that reliability is the most important factor when considering a personal defense firearm. While the Saiga-12 can be a very reliable and effective shotgun, it is inherently less reliable *as compared to the Mossberg 590* based on the nature of it's design. Specifically, I am referring to the fact that the shooter must understand the characteristics and operational philosophy behind the gas chamber selection valve (settings "1" and "2"). Not understanding this can result in malfunctions and/or damage to the gun. You can read all about that at forums.saiga-12.com. You could get the Saiga, pick some rounds, make sure they work and stick with them then don't make any changes. That would work (just make sure that while you're ensuring the gun functions reliably, it also isn't being damaged over time).

The Mossberg 590 is a pump action shotgun, and therefore does not care how light or heavy your loads are - and requires no configuration changes to accommodate your ammo selection.

Bottom line? Get the Mossberg 590 first, since you will be using it for personal defense. Get the Saiga 12 later though - it's great too. Just read up and understand how to use it effectively.

That is my opinion.

I own a 590A1 20"/ 9 shot. My buddies and I love shooting that gun. I have shot a SAIGA 12 ga and I not impressed. If you really need a semi-auto get a Mossberg 930 or a Rem 1100. Another option might be a Mossberg 500 in 20 ga. My wife has one with a 18.5" barrel & a 4 shot side saddle. That gun gets just as much play as my 590A1. Then only disadvantage is the selection & chioce of locally available ammo for buckshot.

I would agree with what the others have said. The Saiga is a bit unwieldy and if you use the larger capacity mags (any of the banana or drum ones) there is a fair chance you would get it caught on something in a confined space, they are also quite heavy.

I can also second whats been said about something like a Remi 1100 if you want a good reliable cheap semi auto. I recently picked one up for a real bargain price and it hasnt skipped a beat. I have put about 400 through it in 2 weeks (sporting clays) and not one hint of a malfunction.

I have and use a Saiga. I like my S12 more than my various tube guns. That said, I think that the 590 is a better choice for most people. The saiga will take work and extra money out of the box to get setup. The box stock S12 is a very different gun than a properly configured S12. It will likely be easier to find good instruction on the 590. Honestly, either one will do what most people ask of their "HD shotguns" and the mossy is cheaper.

I'm sure you would agree that reliability is the most important factor when considering a personal defense firearm. Not really an issue at all for a defensive gun. A saiga will run just fine on gas setting 1 with slugs or buck i.e. the type of ammo one would use for HD. If it is on two it will cycle fine. A few rounds fired that way in a defensive situation is not much of a concern. Sure shooting high brass rounds regularly would be a problem but a couple rounds wont hurt it. In sum, loaded with the type of ammo suited for HD it will cycle on either setting. There are reasons that an S12 might not be the gun to chose but the 2 gas settings isn't one of them.
