Most accurate .308 UNDER $1000

Opinions on the best (most accurate) out of the box BOLT ACTION .308 rifle under $1000. I'm looking to sell a custom DPMS long range AR-10 that I paid $1400 for, waited 9 weeks to get, haven't even shot yet, but am just not happy with (mainly because the fit of the upper and lower receivers is WAY too loose).

I'm going to be using it for long range paper punching AND hunting, but don't care at all about weight. I would prefer a weather resistant (not blued) rifle.

Should I wait for the new Remington 700 Sendero II? Any dealers out there know when exactly these should arrive?

Should I buy some sort of varmint Rem. 700?

Any suggestions on a Remington or other tactical "sniper" model that's super accurate?

Anyone know why Armalite doesn't post the accuracy of their AR-30s like they do their AR-10(T) and AR-15 A4(T) ("1 MOA")? Is the AR-30 a sub MOA gun???

Oh man, here we go again. My suggestion is to buy a Savage 10FP for about $500 and put the rest of your cash into a scope.
 
If you don't like the Savage then I would look into Remington's offerings (PSS maybe) or Tikka.

I know Tikka makes a stainless gun in a polymer stock, and if I recall correctly they come with a proof target that has to shoot a MOA or better.
 
maybe a tikka or sako , but if you cant find that, go with a savage heavy bbl in 24 or 26 in bbl, with the accutrigger, very good. now barrign this , if you can find a parker hale new or used, get this and forget all others.
 
I'd shoot the AR-10 clone first. If the fit really bothers you, shove an accuwedge in there.
 
First I have to say that I don't even own a Savage, but from the ones I've shot you just don't find a more consistantly accurate out of the box rifle until you move up to something like a Steyr SSG PII. You can find a Remmy that shoots good, sometimes, but they just aren't consistantly good. Also, the accutrigger is excellent, wish I could retrofit my rifles with them.

You might try looking at the FN Police series, they have a couple of different models that are all supposed to shoot sub-moa. It's really just a model 70 built to a higher price point. Look at www.cdnninvestments.com, upper right section where it says download catalog, they did have them in there.
 
Is the DPMS really that bad? I've heard great things, accuracy and reliability wise with this firearm. Guess I'll have to hold out for the RRA .308.:)
 
You might want to try the Tikka T3 Varmint, which has a heavier barrel than the standard T3 Lightweight. You should be able to find it for quite a bit under $1000.
 
I tried placing an accuwedge (they called it a "rubber snubber") between the upper and lower of my new long range AR-10 and it didn't help at all. The pins are so loose i can very easily push them all the way through and there's significant wobble between the upper and lower.:cuss: I'm very disappointed for $1400. Of course, it MAY shoot like a dream. It does have a 24 inch cryo treated bull barrel and a 2 stage national match trigger, but if I decide to go with something else, i don't want the value do go down if i try to sell it. Right now i can still say NIB, unfired, mint condition...

I just don't know what to do... Right now i'm thinking: sell it, the scope, armalite base, and forearm grip for a $100 - 200 loss and get a bolt .308.

What about the armalite ar-30? Are these tack drivers or just an expensive POS? I really like my brother's Armalite AR-10(T) and I don't see any reason the AR-30 wouldn't be more accurate (2 inch longer barrel, bolt action, etc.) but they don't list any guranteed accuracy for the AR-30???
 
Remington 700 stainless special, 5R barrel, glass atop, you will be right at or just below your budget and be making one raged hole... if you do your part

1. We're not recommending the 10FP because of the price, we're recommending it because of the performance.

2. Just because you have $1,000 available doesn't mean you have to spend that much. You can use the leftover cash to get a B&C stock and a Harris bipod... or even another rifle! (Whenever you have a few extra dollars left over to buy a new toy with just for fun, a new rimfire, muzzleloader, or any one of a number of milsurp rifles are always good choices.)
 
I don't know what the model number is, but take a look at the Savage 10 series that has the acuutrigger and the synthetic stock. I think the stock is McMillian. Friend bought one about a year ago and it is 1 MOA accurate out of the box with several brands of commercial ammo.

I have a Sako TRG-S that shoots plus or minus 1MOA depending on bullet weight. I think they still make that model. It uses the newer design action.
 
Putting a word out there too for CZ rifles. In this price below $1G you will find good .308s from CZ, Remington, Savage, and Tikka. I recently got a CZ 550 Varmint in .308 on a H&S kevlar stock for several hundred less than a grand, and I find it to be a very good rifle.
 
Savage Rifles.

Like someone already said, Savage is being recommended on performance, not price. I've got a Savage .308 that will shoot outside edge-to outside edge groups of one inch all day long. And I'm not a terrible good shot.
 
Can't say enough about 700s. Have a Rem 700 VS, Nikon 4X12X50, Harris bopod all for about $900. Rifle is capable of sub .5MOA right out of box. Plus, she's a cheap date. Loves Rem. Core-Lokt but doesn't much care for match grade:confused:
 
700 5R is a solid rifle. I had one and moved to a different rifle that still squeeks under your 1K mark.

FN SPR A1

I have bedded mine (Marine Tex) and pained the stock OD with Allumi-hyde II). It was a .7 rig out of the box and it's been a solid .5 rig after bedding.
....all that from a MATCH-GRADE CHROME-LINED barrel.
