Most useless feature on an AR15.

You can always have that last round in the pistol grip to shoot yourself in the head from the shame of having a $1,500 red dot sight fail and you have no BUIS to save you in a firefight.

a bunch of us bought the CAA M4 buttstock that featured the little compartment that carried 4 extra surefire batteries. every one of us noticed that once we got done wiht a patrol, the batteries were never there. damn thing couldnt keep a secure lock and they would fall right out on the ground. IMHO they are useless.

This is a problem I see over and over again. Someone buys a cheap version, or a cheap imitation, of an accessory (or whole gun) and then proclaims the whole concept "useless". A Crapco stock that won't keep the batteries held in is not the same thing as a stock like the Vltor, or SOPMOD, or UBR that have compartments that latch, and stay latched for thousands of rounds.

if you want to spend $125-$200 on a M4 VLTOR stock just so you can put a few batteries in the stock instead of a pocket or a pouch then thats fine i suppose. the only reason i bought the CAA stock is for the ability to put the sling swivel on it so i could use a WOLF sling over there which i highly recommend for anyone carrying a carbine and wearing MOLLE equipment to work (troops/contractors/mall security). i just dont see the absolute NEED for that in a domestic (at the range/home defense) environment. i do carry a light on my home defense weapon, but i dont think the burglar will allow me the time during our sustained firefight to swap out batteries if i am neglectful enough to let them run dead in the light. ill just turn the room light on, problem solved. i am mindful enough to swap out batteries every few months and do a weekly on/off function check to make sure its still kicking. this forum is turning into one of those 'youre stupid, no youre stupid' topics, so we will just have to agree to disagree. fair enough?

I think the most useless thing Ive seen for an AR are those double drum mags, I think they hold 100 or so. Ive seen 2 people bring them back to the store with problems and heard more then I can count complaining about them jamming ALOT or a pain in the a$$ to load. Ive never seen one on a combat rifle and Im sure for good reason.

schmidt & bender short dots are retailing for $2600 now

forward assists, deflectors, dust covers

i loved them on the subcontinent, here in peaceville I havent used them yet, and I am left handed and used the sportical for awhile so I fully understand the uselessness of the deflector

I love my dust cover, it's so... dust covery... yeah. But my deflector actually caught a few pieces of flying brass because I see the dings on it. Otherwise it would have flown into my shirt and made me dance the hot brass jig.

While I disagree with about 80% of the submissions in this thread, I truly don't understand why someone would say the deflectors are useless.

Almost every one of my ARs have the finish worn off the deflector where cases strike it as they're ejecting. I can post pics if you like.

I think the only AR-pattern gun I have that doesn't have a case deflector is my SR25 and every single one of the 308 cases I've fired has bounced off my chin into my right shoulder and into a neat little pile. I've got to say, it's sort of annoying. I just shoot through it like all sorts of other annoying things, but if I could put a simple lump of aluminum on it to stop it, why wouldn't i?

edit: i also shoot left-handed

At least the deflector is a factory piece too... not a rail mounted accessory. Direct the anger there first!

If we're going to go that far... I would say the metal butt plate on the non-telescoping stock is useless. So is the minimal plastic butt plate on the telescoping stock. So is the extra finger groove on the pistol grip. Then you got the ridge above the mag release, that never really prevents you from hitting the button. What about that double post front sight that makes a triangle when you can just have a single post front sight like all the other rifles?

" A 3v or 6v flash light on a rifle with a barrel longer than 20 inches"- I have to agree, pretty useless, usually 24 inch barrels are found on long range target or sniper rifles.

"Bright, polished stainless barrels" These are usually found on accurate target rifles, usually bull barrels.

"A bull barrel shorter than 20 inches"- I have a 16 inch bull barrel on my DPMS, I know someone who was firing the Lopro classic at 500-600 meters, he was making some nice groups with it. I like the accuracy, the weight is noticeable, front heavy, but not very excessive.

"A collapsible stock on a rifle with a bull barrel of any length"- My Lopro classic has the collapsable stock, its nice for its adjustable length, but you need a stock that locks tight to help the accuracy.

"A collapsible stock on a rifle with a barrel longer than 18 inches"-I dont see why someone would want this, but to each their own.

"An AR15 pistol, the kind with a short barrel and no stock on the buffer tube"-If you install a stock its now illegal unless you have the tax stamp for a SBR. Its was made as a pistol for those who want that, not my cup of tea either.

" Pigtail-style pressure switch wires"- They can be very useful for mounting flashlights.

The other features I dont see any need for that you mentioned.
I dont have a need for a case deflector or a forward assist, never needed either. Also, unless you have no other option to defend yourself, a bayonet lug is pretty useless.
I dont like A1 models much (A2 sights are far better), flat tops are my personal choice.

I guess I am lucky because I have my M6 mounted on my 20" upper because it's nice to have a light/laser on my all-around rifle. Hope that meets with your collective approval.

my 16" hbar has the telestock.

to tell you the truth, i like the clean lines of the a2 stock, but my safe is pretty full of long guns, and if im in a hurry to lock it all up, i can just lay the rifle on the top shelf of the safe when the stock is all the way in.

not a big deal, but ive done it quite a few times.

Most useless?

Anyone with one in their hands or one on their minds saying they aren't necessary for sporting purposes so we're going to go ahead and ban them.

Yes, that includes NRA board members.

forward assists, deflectors, dust covers

i hope to god you have used an AR outside of the range or playing with it in your house in front of your friends before making this assumption

foreward assist - some people spend time with their rifle outdoors more than a few hours and expose them to harsh elements such as mud, dust, dirt, etc... when you slam the bolt home on a fresh mag (especially is its a tight mag) it doesnt always lock, so the foreward assist is instrumental

brass deflector - the AR is not a truely ambidextrious weapon, so the best comprimise was to make a deflector in order to keep brass from flying in to the eyes of our left handed shooters. yes many companies make lefties now, but the military doesnt issue them

dust covers - almost hand-in-hand with foreward assist. this weapon wasnt made for domestic use, it was made for battle. why expose the bolt and risk oxidation and wear down of lubricant?

once again, this weapon was made for battle, not for sitting in an air conditioned bedroom waiting to spray holes into the burglar that you dream will break in. it was designed to take down charlie in a more efficient and economical way than the M14 could.

well, keep in mind that the scope on that page is an ACOG, using trijicon to keep the reticle illuminated at all times without batteries, making it almost near 100% reliable, plus its made to nearly be tossed down a cliff and retain its zero let alone not become destroyed.

poor comparison to a 'red dot'

the leupold CQ/T though, i find that unreasonably high priced at $700 or more, depending on where you shop

This is a perfect example of why this thread sucks.

You just spent the last several pages crapping on everyone else's guns, and then something you like gets crapped on and you get all pouty. Freakin' Hilarious.
