In a constant state of confusion.
Season's Greetings all,

I am relocating to Winnemucca Nevada in a few weeks and I am looking for advice for several things.

What, in your opinion, is a good school to get certified for my CHL?
Are there any good shooting clubs?
What is a good gun shop?
What are the good local(within 2 hours drive time) fishing/hunting areas?
Anything else you think I might need to know.

Any advice or opinions on these questions is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Jon

Welcome to Free America

Don't have all your answers.

Let's start here:
Gun Stores in Winnemucca
Monument Valley Firearms
Winnemucca, NV 89446
775-625-4832

Brown's True Value Hardware
Winnemucca, NV 89445
775-623-2543

You are about 170 miles out of Reno (2.5 hours drive).

Reno has plenty of gun stores and CCW instructors.

I think if you try the phone numbers above, you'll have a starting point.

If you like, I can contact my local shops in Reno and Carson City and see who they know in Winnemucca.

By the way: Whatcha gonna be doin' over there?

I think

you'll be at least 2.5 hours from anywhere (if you obey the speed limit, which no one seems to when not in town)

Hunting and fishing will probably be within city limits, if not, then 10 minutes away.

Always keep water and emergency supplies in
your truck.... Look out for that cow in the road, run over the jack rabbit...it's trying to make you crash.
It's not a dog it's a coyote.
We have really big mountain lions around here.

Supposedly we have open carry, I never see it...I always see hardly concealed though.

Reno's motto "arrive on vacation leave on probation" seems to be very applicable!

Be patient buying guns, there is always a better deal.....get in touch when yer in Reno, We'll have coffee!

Thanks for the numbers, info, and Basque restaurant info.

A co-worker of mine grew up there. He describes the place in detail whenever he wants to draw comparisons to hell.

haha. It was 4 degrees at night and they said it was warm. They said it would get into the negatives. I dread the summer and the heat, but it's a good move for me.

I was sold on the move when I went into Reliable Hardware and they sold AK47's. Now I can put my off-list recievers together and enjoy life.

Never lived there. But I have spent alot of time in town.
There is a gun club to the north can not think of it at this time.

They do hold highpower matches and other events at the puplic range just across the interstate. 100 yards is it unless that has changed.
you are close to the black rock desert and if you like the wide open spaces you will find lots of it in your area.

I found it a quite peacefull town with things you can do. You have the casino's if thats your thing. A small airport and the train runs threw town.
Are you going there for the mining as if you are you already know its a long drive to the mines.
Most folks can not wait to get out of the place and if you do not like the area and are used to more things around you may find it the same.

Good luck and enjoy Nevada as northern Nevada is nice if you like the outdoors.

I've lived here in Winnemucca since '97. As in the case of most smallish communities, it is WHAT YOU MAKE IT!

We have:

-French Ford Gun Club

-Winnemucca Handgun Association

-Winnemucca Trap Club

We recently suffered the loss of the County range mentioned previously, and are in something of a holding pattern until a new range is created. A committee to address the problem was created by the County Commissioners and research is proceeding.

When we DO have a range, there are man-on-man steel shoots, NRA (Reduced Range) Highpower Rifle, NRA Field Pistol, and likely some others, on a monthly basis. We're in a sort of league which rotates various shoots from here to Elko, Carson City, Fernley, etc.

The Trap Club shoots all year-round, and has quite a few ATA trap layouts plus a couple of International fields. Fields are lighted for night shooting, too. They're very active.

The two hardware stores, Ace (Reliable) and Brown's (Tru-Valu) are better than an awful lot of "gunstores" I've been in. They keep a decent stock of MANY types of guns, will happily special-order stuff, and handloading supplies and gear are easily available. Powder and primer prices here are MUCH cheaper than in Reno.

There's excellent deer and lion hunting in the immediate area, IF one draws a tag. Fishing is pretty decent too, as long as you're prepared to drive a bit.

In cast-bullet circles, Winnemucca has some fame as the host community for the annual Nevada Cast Bullet Shoot, of which 2007 will see the eighth version. It's a weekend-long FUN event, a lot of socializing, good food and enjoyment mixed with a good deal of cast-bullet rifle and handgun 'exercise'. It'll happen on the third weekend of May, beginning on Friday and ending with our traditional closing dinner on Sunday at one of our fine Basque restaurants.

Let us know as the moving time gets close, and we'll arrange a meeting.

For a lot more detail on the Cast Bullet Shoot, go to www.cb.gunloads.com and scroll 'way down to the "Competitions" forum. You can find a lot of discussion about earlier Shoots there as well, plus a lot of photos at www.castpics.net under "Events".

When you get tired of the heat in summer - don't forget to visit Winnemucca's sister city - Crescent City,CA! The fishing is good, the firearms laws are bad, but it's cool. Simply get on the highway and head west until your car gets stuck on the beach. There is a big redwood log monument in town so Winnemucca residents will know what a real tree looks like. Humor aside, I want to wish you the best of luck in your new residence.

I always enjhoyed rattin' around the east side of the Black Rock Desert, south of King Lear Peak. Coyotes, ground squirrels and jack rabbit shooting was a lot of fun. Found some good varminting down southwest of town, as well. This was around 25 years back, though. Back when Claude Dallas was doing his thing, as sung about by Ian Tyson. :)
