Well, it was truly a great anniversary for me today. I got off work and my wife and I went to the range today. Why this is significant is that this time last year, my wife was vehemently anti-gun.
Through a series of events, we got into a situation where SD was an obvious necessity and after years of 'light arguments' I went out and got my first gun over her objections as our family was clearly in danger. She was angry, even though she knew I was right and acting to defend our family, but still didn't want to shoot or anything (her cousin killed himself with a gun when she was young).
Fast forward, after reading and learning a lot here, hearing different arguments, and also learning about SD situations in our own community, I was able to get her to go out once with me, but my Beretta was too big for her small hands so it didn't go well.
Fast forward a little more, some recent police cearches near our home and 2 deputies shot in 1 week here in Broward (all the while saying 'see honey, there is no safe place, we need to be prepared'), and I've actually been able to get her thinking about getting a CCW permit! So we went to the range today, and I've been preparing for this: since the last trip, I've purchased a Browning Buckmark and a GP100. I also borrowed a friend's 38 snubby. We got to shoot for a while. She was actually one of the better new shooters I've taught. She has a natural gift for it, and did great with the out to about 20 ft. We tried out the 38s and finished up with a few 357 rounds. She had fun, and was even asking about what kind of personal gun to get toward the end...
It's been a big year. From dogmatically anti to looking at CCW. I just wanted to share the joy, and say thanks to everybody here who I have learned so much from, especially Pax with the cornered cat, who have helped me to strategically think through the minefield of guns and families with small children.
I wonder what the next year will hold?
