Actually this is my first rifle chambered in 7.62 X 39mm. I gave $135 for the rifle and one 30 round magazine. Not a bad price, right? Now where can I find some cheap ammo, and cheap mags? I want some 10 rounders and 20 rounders. The 30 rounder is just a little bit excessive. This is going to be a "project rifle". Don't know yet what mods I want, but definately some new sights and a new stock. Thanks in advance.

I guess I'm old fashion but I prefer the stock 10 rounder and feed it with strip clips.

I don't really the like of that huge mag, but it still is a beautiful rifle. Congratulations! I'm looking to pick up an SKS this year.

Nice gun .. I like it .. go to CDNN for mags .. aimsurplus or cheaperthandirt for ammo ..

I don't really care for the 30 round mag either. I am gonna start looking for some 10s and 20s. Going to shoot it tomorrow, and I'll let y'all know how it goes. Oh yeah, only one word for the bore...immaculate. All matching serial numbers too. I think it was $135 very well spent.

Congratulations on purchasing one of the finest carbine rifles ever made! Aim surplus is great, especially if you are close to Ohio (shipping). Stock 10 rounder mags are very functional, check out some local shops that sell military surplus rifles or a gunshow. Also available online. Clean the firing pin in the bolt and you can avoid the dreaded sks slam-fire!!

Nice SKS. Good idea about going down to 10 and 20 round mags, they dont look as ridiculous on an SKS as the 30 and 40 rounders do.

I use 10 and 20 round mags. Here's a pic of what it looks like with a 20 round mag:

Here's what it looks like with a 10 round mag:

cheap ammo (that's supposed to be good stuff)

I just received a case of Golden Tiger (Russian), 124 gr. FMJBT, lead core, steel case, non corrosive. Price was $165 with free shipping.

1/2 case shipped is $95. 5 cases shipped is $775. "While supplies last!"

Quick question - is that a "D" model that accepts AK mags, or does it have the "duckbill" SKS only mags? Either way, decent deal indeed, but if it's a "D", that's a killer deal.

It's not a "D". The mag release isn't right.

That mag is interesting though. I've never seen an AK or SKS mag with the witness slot so you can see the rounds.

I'd like to see more pics of the magazine.

DMK, ask and you shall recieve. It's actually a pretty craptacular mag. It won't hold anywhere near the the thirty rounds it was designed for, and just getting in twenty was a PIA. Here it is, nonetheless.

Dumb question...

How do I remove the trigger gaurd to install a non detachable mag. Guy I bought the rifle from gave me a 20 rounder today. I just don't know how to install the dang thing. I'm sure it is quite simple, as the bolt take down was a breeze. Thanks in advance.

Nevermind, won't work will it? The non detachable mag isn't even made the same way. Totally different design, huh?

To remove the trigger assembly:
MAKE SURE THE RIFLE IS NOT LOADED
1.Put the safety ON (this is mechanically necessary to remove trigger assembly).
2. With the rifle upside down on a sturdy surface, use a tool to depress the button at the rear of the trigger guard. You will have to lean on it. It does take a lot of pressure to release it. The trigger assembly will sort of "pop" once it releases.
3. The trigger assembly will just lift out at that point. Once it has been removed, Non-detachable mags can be inserted.

Yes, the 20 round non-detachable mags will work. The design difference is what makes them detachable or non-detachable.

1. Lock the bolt open (this just makes it easier to install the mag).
2. With the rifle upside down, set the mag in the well. Make sure the front of the mag locks or hooks into the receiver (just like the detachable ones do)
3. After setting the mag in place, insert the trigger assembly front end first. There is a tab on the mag that the trigger assembly must sit over top of (this is what keeps it from being detachable). If this is not done right, the mag will wobble around and even fall out. It will of course not feed correctly.
4. With the trigger assembly in place and safety still ON, press down real hard on the trigger guard to lock into place. Once again, you will have to lean on it. Put some weight on it and you will feel it lock into place.

Good luck with it

ETA: Once the trigger assembly is removed, the stock can then be removed from the receiver. Just FYI.

Rexrider,

Thanks for your input, I will try again. I got the trigger guard out very easily once I found that release button. The 20 rounder will not let causes the trigger guard to bind and thus not "pop" back into place.

Congrats. Many (most) aftermarket SKS mags are not all that reliable so be prepared to have issues with it. Find yourself the non-detachable 10 rd mag that comes with those standard and you should be golden.

If the 20 rounder your friend gave you the other day is one of those 20rnd chinese hatchet mags with the star on the side - then take heart, if at first it doesn't fit, just keep trying/pounding on it. I've installed one for a friend (legal owner) at the range once and they take some messing about with to get em to go in. Sometimes they take quite a bit of force as well. specially if the sks your trying to fit it into isn't a chinese.

As a last resort you may want to lightly take a file to the forward pin recess on the mag to deepen it slightly. (moving the mag forward in the well and alowing it to latch easier) But try to jigger it into place as best you can first.

Good news for me, bad news for Bazookajoe. I made it work, FINALLY!!! Lot's of filing. Joe, I'm gonna ask this guy if he has anymore. It was the hatchett style Chinese mag.
