My girlfriend is buying me an SP101 tomorrow.

I'm excited. It's kind of a late Christmas present, but we're heading up to the city tomorrow to buy a shiny new 2 1/4" SP101 in .357 with a spurless hammer (and an aftermarket grip, of course).

I got a 4" Ruger Security Six from a friend a while ago, and the first time I shot it I decided that I needed a few more Ruger revolvers. I also decided that each one will need a new grip, but that's a minor point. This will be first new Ruger I buy, but definitely not the last.

Now I just need to find a good holster and I'll be set. I have a 4-day weekend ahead of me, so hopefully we don't get that foot of snow they're predicting and I can head out to the range once or twice.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share my excitement, thanks for listening.

Congratulations. I have exactly the same gun and I believe you will enjoy it. My only caution is around your choice in grip. I replaced the factory rubber with a pair of Eagle Secret Service ebony grips. I personally find them painful... particularly with hotter .357 loads.

What a nice girlfriend-
My fiancé has an SP101 and we both like it. We bought a Bianchi iwb suede holster with spring clip and thumb snap and a "SOB" (small of back) I believe the 2nd one is a Kramer, but we both prefer the Bianchi.
Have fun, that little sucker will handle everything in the way of loads.

Great gun and sounds like an even better girlfriend. I actually prefer the factory grip on the SP-101 and the GP-100 both, I change the inserts but like the rubber part. Either way you'll love the gun, it's truly a great all arounder.

Congratulations on your new Ruger. My wife packs the same revolver but loads it with 38+p vs the .357s. We put the Hogue sp101 rubber grips on hers for speed loader clearance. Excellent handgun, should serve you well.

The Hogue grip fit pretty tight. Had to be careful and spread top a bit to get clearence when slidding on. After that they fit like a glove and do a nice job with the recoil.

Perhaps you should say, "My girlfriend is paying for a new gun for me tomorrow." If SHE buys it for YOU, and fills out the 4473 accurately, the dealer won't allow the sale to proceed. If she says on the form that the gun is for HER but really intends to give it to YOU, she is committing a federal crime.

Here's some advice. YOU pick out the gun. YOU fill out the paperwork. Let HER pay for it, but YOU are purchasing it.

Nitpicky, I know. But if you can into a store and said what you just posted, I wouldn't sell you any firearm.

I have the same firearm and will never part with it.
Dry fire it a lot and the action will smooth out nicely.
If the factory grips are too small to get a controllable grip try http://www.trausch.com they fit my hand perfectly, not sticky or too big for CCW, and cushion recoil well.
If you plan to carry IWB http://www.clipdraw.com I like to keep things simple and not mess around with a bunch of "gear" and the Clip Draw is about as simple as you can get.

Oh and here are a couple of ideas for your holsters. I have both the 2" DAO and the 3" SP-101's. I have a IWB holster from Tucker Gunleather here in Texas and an OWB Holster from Don Hume. I have worn both extensively and they are super comfortable.

SP 101

Mine shoots very comfortably. My son just got a snubby from another reputable gunmaker and I have trouble hitting anything with it. But the Ruger is heavier and feels very stable compared to what he got. I shoot well with my gun and it is still easily concealable. I wish he would have taken more time to research things before buying a snubbie, then he would have gotten the SP 101!

Not exactly. An illegal "strawman purchase" involves a gun buy by an elligible buyer with intent to transfer it to an inelligible buyer. Part of the proof of a "strawman purchase" is that the money comes from the inelligible buyer.

It is not illegal for an elligible buyer to purchase a firearm as a bona fide gift to another elligible person.

So, I got it. The only one they had was the floor model, which has a couple of minor scratches, but nothing I wouldn't have done in a couple days anyway. It's a carry gun, and I'll be getting another one eventually anyway, so I'm not too concerned. And I wrote the check, so there's no way it could be a straw purchase. I figured it would be better that way, since she just changed her residence from Iowa last week, and her South Dakota CCW permit won't be here for another couple days. I didn't want to take a chance with a waiting period.

Anyway, I got the SP101, and a Hogue Monogrip, and ended up with a black Galco Speed Master High Ride holster. I would have preferred brown, but apparently SP101 holsters are rare in my area. The black matches the grip better anyway. In any case, it's a nice holster, so I'm happy.

Makes me wish the weather wasn't so bad, so I could make it out to the range this weekend. Coming back on the interstate a plow truck was in the ditch, which is always a bad sign. I had a couple close calls, but made it back safe, even if it took a little longer than usual.

Thanks again for all the replies, I've enjoyed them, and some of the comments made my girlfriend chuckle a little too. No wonder this forum is my favorite.

Gary's didn't have any, and hasn't for a few months since I've been looking at them. I got it at Sportsman's Warehouse, which seems to have good prices and service as well. I always feel bad for not buying at Gary's, but pretty much all my accessories and ammo are from them regardless of where I bought by guns.

Gary's is a great shop, but they don't seem to have a very good inventory of Ruger revolvers at the moment. They had one 3" SP101 and that's it. Sportsman's Warehouse had about a dozen different Ruger's on display, although they only had one of what I wanted. Even Scheels had a better Ruger revolver selection than Gary's, and all they had were a few GP100's in various lengths.

I'll probably get my next one at Gary's, but I think I'll warn them a month or so ahead of time.
