I am in one of the worst states possible, Maryland. I have been required to show a valid ID EVERYTIME I have voted, since I started voting.
I honestly thought that was some kind of Federal Law.
I think you should have to show an ID. Should you have to pay for one? Damn straight. If you are so broke that you can't afford an ID from the state then you are nothing but a leach on society and obviously giving nothing back to Socitey and or the Economy. It would be easy to find out if you were actually that poor. A trip to your home by a social worker would kill that lie quickly.
I'd be willing to bet that the people complaining about the cost of a State ID are the same ones that sent there kids to school with me and filled out the applications for free and or reduced luches.
Mind you, ALL of those kids had better/nicer things than I.

People here have been talking about how easy it is to get a fake ID, but nobody's mentioned yet the difficulty involved in getting a fake ID that matched the voter rolls. I don't know about you folks, but when I go vote they check my voter registration card and ID against the list of registered voters. If the name and address don't match, then I'd better be able to explain why.

No they are just requiring you to pay a fee to excersize a constitutional right. And frankly if you need papers to vote, you need papers to be an American
You can be an American all you want, but if you want to vote it kinda makes sense that we have honest elections, and therefore we have to document who you are.
Also, why do you have a problem with having to pay to document who you are? This is America and we are supposed to believe in capitalism, why do you expect others to pick up the tab on your ID?
Its very easy to get fake driver's licenses in GA. We see them fairly often amongst illegal aliens here.
The people at the polling place do not have any way of knowing if an ID is fake or not.
So how will this help?
At the bar I work at we have scanners that verify if an ID is real or fake, it scans code put into the license that only the DMV has so no matter how authentic it looks it will not be accepted if not legitimate. The people at the poling place need just to scan the ID.

I have never had my DL scanned in Georgia.

Well, I live in NH, mon ami, and it's happened to me a few imes here and in MA. The point is that it's realistic technology that is easy to implement and also unobtrusive. The polling volunteers don't have to be skilled in how to spot fake IDs, they can simply scan and you'll be on your way.
