"National gun fetish and increasing racism go hand in hand."

That's funny, the most egregious examples of racism I've seen in usenet involved ANTI-gun people. If you're Black [or Jewish] and want to have racial and ethnic epithets hurled at you in usenet, refuse to support gun control when told to.

Gun control in the US has ALWAYS been about race.

Which is why the story had me tearing up from laughter :D. I love irony, especially when someone oblivious to it is the one saying it.

wow..

That had to be one of the most racist sites I have ever seen.

I think Ill have to set up a donation site. To get all those darn guns off the streets.... into my safes.

Insanity.

Is it?

In this very forum we had people saying gun companies shouldn't support MMA fighters. One person even put up a picture of a fighter and said do you think a gun company should sponsor a person who looks like this?

If people who own guns says someone shouldn't be linked to guns based on his looks, it's not a big leap to do it with race.

I see what you are getting at, but I think that the leap is larger than you are giving it credit for.

Most reasonable people understand that race is a significantly different thing than other aspects of appearance. People don't CHOOSE their race (well, maybe Michael Jackson did...) but they CAN choose the way they represent themselves.

As I see it-- outside of genetic factors, people CHOOSE how they look. People work obsessively hard to present a certain image whatever that may be. And they will be viewed in the light of that image that they have created.

I personally would not be favorable to a gun company associating itself with our gang culture. Considering the societal problems associated with that culture, it would be idiocy to link a company's image to it willingly if they seek a consumer base outside that culture.

Before someone accuses me of racism for mentioning gangs, there are gangs of all flavors.

From the article:

Most white male gun owners I have spoken to have fantasies of shooting and killing brown skinned people.

Holy cow. I'm sure someone will eat this pablum up.

Pathetic human being.

True. But consider this:

People here are drawing a line between gun ownership and appearance and this is "The High Road". This is supposed to be a better class people.

What's happening with "normal" people?

Once you consider that, then that leap isn't that big. If the people who are supposed to be of a better moral standing are saying someone shouldn't own guns based on appearance, then it's hardly unbelievable that people of lower moral standing are doing it with race, religion, etc.

Email and response

I sent an email to the address listed on the site ([email protected]):

"Most white male gun owners I have spoken to have fantasies of shooting and killing brown skinned people. They will demur "in self defense", but our national gun fetish and increasing racism go hand in hand."

It is a tragedy that your opinion of "white male gun owners" has been formed by your interactions with a small portion of the community. This type of stereotyping and prejudice is exactly what you should be trying to avoid.

I am a gun owner and yes, I am white. I think the art you have displayed on this website is a beautiful tribute to people who were killed with guns. I have no problem with the art. I do have a problem with the one paragraph on the homepage that I mentioned above. You do not need to stoop to that level to give credence to your artwork. The fact that the art is usually created as a symbol of closure and a method of healing for a specific death is more powerful than any sweeping political statement could ever be. I think you are trying too hard and in the process got caught up in prejudice yourself. Keep doing what you are doing, but please keep the stereotypes out of it.

Hector Campbell

I got the following response from [email protected]:

Virtually all the gun owners who respond to the site claim that just
got rid of all the " drug dealers, gang bangers ( what color is there
skin) and other social misfits all would be well. The truth is if
you ask a white gun owner who they imagine they would ever need to
shot it is virtually always someone with darker skin then theirs.
Just the facts. Racists hide in the gun culture and people who a part
of this culture who are not racist give them cover. Every Neo-nazi
or violent extremist ( Timothy McViegh) I have ever met or
interviewed hides in and recruits out of the gun shows. As a gun
owner you need to step up and hold these venues responsible. This is
your hobby, one that kills 40,000 people a year. Isn't time you
excepted some responsibility for your beliefs.

I don't even know where to start...according to this guy I'm responsible for 40,000 deaths a year and also for the Oklahoma City Bombing.

Aha! So because we want to defend ourselves against 'drug dealers, gang bangers and social misfits', and because said criminals are always brown skinned, we are in fact dreaming about killing brown-skinned people? Now there is some funky logic right there.

XD, you must REALLY REALLY like men fighting in a chain-link bound arena to bring up a subject that got locked down once already. As to this website, I teared up watching the destruction of that Colt Trooper Mk III (or is it a Python? tough to tell at that angle).

Which makes more sense: get rid of [criminals] and there'd be less crime OR get rid of [guns] and there'd be less crime. Get rid of the ACTORS -- the perpetrators -- or get rid of a tool.

Another instance of a person in whom logic is looked upon as a vampire looks upon garlic.

Just the facts.

Hahaha! Facts? I do not think this word means what you think it means.

Guess author of the article who thinks guns cause racism is unaware that gun control has its roots in post War Between the States when African Americans were given "rights" and those in control feared African Americans obtaining weapons. Racism is much older than firearms. Banning firearms was a tool of the racists.

Recently I had one of my most enjoyable range visits ever. First off I jumped on this stupid white boy because he was hitting the target carrier with every shot while looking quite tactical.

Then I met a nice young lady lady who was there with her uncle to try out shooting a pistol before she went to Army boot camp. Really nice family, they were black. Wished her luck in her future service. Going off to be a medical tech of some sort.

Helped a guy who politely asked me to look at his pistol. I showed him why it was jamming, how to grip it correctly, what to lube and I test fired it. Plenty accurate at 7 yards. It was a Hi-Point, he was black. Incidentally he was pissed his new toy jammed and was heading to the gun store to get an upgrade.

Met another nice young lady there with her boyfriend. She didn't want to shoot his .40, too loud and scared. I talked her into trying out my .22, first time she ever fired a gun in her life. Big smile after all that scared. Both black.

See, black people just have to stick together as gun owners. Oh wait, I'm just a dumb white boy. Still pissed at tactical white boy, he was dangerous.

We have a strong prevalence towards white people here; just a matter of maths. Don't get many people from 'ethnic minorities' or whatever the PC term is these days down the range, but I've seen and taught at least one Muslim, people I know to be gay, women... To be honest I don't tend to notice people's race/skin colour whathaveyou, and frankly I don;t give a damn. I find that it is not upon a person's lineage they should be judged, but on the qualities and nature of their actions.

I see that they've got that unrepentant anti-white racist and organized criminal Willie Brown (no pun intended) on their site. Don't have to look far to find out where their racist ideas came from.

Its beautiful, charming and alluring beyond description. The Baghdad by the Bay appellation doesn't do it justice.Comparing San Francisco to any other American city, scenic wise, is like comparing the Hope Diamond to a cheap Zales Jewelers knockoff.
Um, no offense, but you need to get out more often. I used to live across the bay in Walnut Creek (nice place), and worked at offices at 2nd and Mission, Justin Herman plaza, and One California for years. The place is so ugly it made me sad. At the end of each day I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Makes me shudder just to think about it. So glad that I never have to go back.

Makes ya wonder where the good Rev. Jackson and Sharpton are on this one.
Jesse and Al only profit from creating hysteria through supposed anti-black racism. If whites were being marched into concentration camps they would call it progress. They are total and complete racists, and it sickens me that the mainstream media kowtow to these dirtballs nonstop.

HHmmmm weren't many of the modern gun laws created to keep minorities from owning them? ---- Jim Crowe laws and all that stuff?

I wish every "minority" in "bad neighborhoods" that "the man" keeps them living in poverty in or so those people think...

were given the guns confiscated from criminals after their fair trial and conviction for free. maybe then crime would lessen, the neighborhoods would become safer, children could go to school and mind their studies and give back to their communities in adult life making them better! (that is the law abiding ones)

Well, it makes very little difference to these folks, but I will state it for record. I have many firearms of many different kinds. At one time, I could have supplied a Finnish infantry company with their Mosins. Even today I have enough that I supplied ammo to some folks just after Katrina - because they asked. I have revolvers, autos, semi-autos, bolt actions, break actions, and have rifles, pistols, and shotguns.

I also teach my son respect for all races. Both in public and, more importantly, in private. We raise our son to accept all people at face value (this does mean, of course, that if the guy looks like a bum, you accept that he is a bum unless he proves otherwise, but that is for his safety). He will go to a local public school that is racially mixed. He will be taught to address all of his elders with respect, regardless of race.

The key here is that our children will be taught very little about race directly, because we don't want the focus to be on race. They will see by the way we relate to people of all races the correct way to relate. They will hear our words in private and know that there is but one face, not two. (Believe it or not, such is very common in south Mississippi, where race relations are probably far better here than in many other parts of the nation).

After Katrina, folks were helped regardless of their skin. We grilled for hours the contents of our freezer and made the grilled chicken and beef available to any neighbor, and we live in a mixed-race neighborhood (pretty solidly middle-class, admittedly).

If these guys want to call me a racist, well, I live in Mississippi and am white, so I'm called that anyway. Reality may be unimportant, but I will know how my family is raised. And when I die and my list of sins is compiled against me, hatred for my neighbor will not be one of them.

My guns are already works of art, and none of them displays even the slightest racism. The dark-colored ones get along just fine with the light-colored ones, and I've never heard any name calling amongst them.

Or did I miss the point... again?
