Neck tension- Who is wrong? Montana gold or myself?

I don't care how you flare or crimp the rounds, having bullets mic out at three thou under spec is gonna cause neck tension issues.... Is this measurement consistent from the shoulder to the base of the bullet?

.003 under is way out of tolerance.

.449 on a "jhp" would be .002 under the usual .451. The .452 number applies to lead, I believe.

FWIW, my Hornady expander for jacketed measures .449. The alternate expander they offer measures .450.

I still think the bullets are off, but expect they are useable with the appropriate amount of crimp for their diameter.

Interesting thread, as I have used MG, 230gr. FMJs for years... all of mine are loaded right now so I cannot get a "before" measurement. I've never had a problem loading or shooting them however.

I do my sizing on a single stage with a Hornady New Dimension carbide die, and all other operations other than priming on a Dillon Square Deal. There is no crimp - I simply straighten whatever minor bell is put in the case at the powder station on the Dillon.

I don't understand how a $10,000 carbide bullet swaging die set would produce .002" undersized bullets for a company who would then put them out there knowing people own micrometers and can easily detect this?

Anything is possible if you put production first.

I would chuck them in the trash and buy from another seller. Their .45 bullets are too expensive IMHO.

Trash? never! melt the lead out, cast boolits and scrap the jackets. 99% of what I shoot in 45 is my cast boolits, I just like to send 2 or 3 fmj's down the bore at the end of a range session to clean out any little bits of minor leading that may be in the bore... scrubbing out a tiny little streak of lead along a bit of the rifling can take a while... a 230gr fmj does it at 615 MPH!

and yes, I never plan to buy from them again... my LGS sells repackaged 100 packs of hornady 230gr fmj's for $19.

918v- I understand where you are coming from but on the other end, no one has been able to tell me how I could have possibly sized the bullet down to .449(completely, not just the top)... see where im coming from?

I read your post about the bullets and neck tension. The bullets measured .449" way small! How did they get out of the factory that small?? The manufacture should make it square with you. I cast my own and size to .452" so I haven't had many neck tension problems.

I have 450 of the Montana Gold JHP. Split 1000 with another local shooter sometime last year.... I have only loaded a box of 50 for testing... 5.6gr WW231, Winchester SPP, S&B brass. They shot fine and seemed to load fine.

Seeing this thread, I went into the garage and random pulled 10 from my stock just to see and they measure .450ish on my dial caliper.... some a smidge smaller but not quite .449.... I break out the 0-1 mic and they range from .4497-.4505
