Long story shot..... I was set on a Wilson Combat 1911 and I was going to custom order one (especially since I am left handed) and was told it was a 24 month waiting list so I have decided against that. I have looked for a solid 3 months on gunbroker for the one that I wanted with the exact options and simply is not happening.
So then I started thinking about getting an Ultra Carry 1911, but now think I have decided against that.
So now I am a bit at lost of what to get next. I am going to leave available balance on my "gun fund" in case the Wilson Combat ever pops up.... with that being said my spare funds that is available is around $1,000. That will give me the money that I need (around $3,000) if that Wilson Combat ever pops up.
Here are the guns that I currently have

Saiga 12
Browning A Bolt 300 Remington Ultra Mag
Kel Tec PMR 30 (22 magnum)
Mosin Nagant
Glock 23
Smith and Wesson 500
PTR-91
Beowulf 50 by Alexander Arms
SKS
22 over .410 (passed to me by my Grandfather)
Browning Citori White Lightning 12g
CZ 452 .17 HMR

There might be some that I am leaving out. I am ready for something new, cool, and fun to shoot! I am not into old timing guns such as lever actions, cowboy guns etc. Any recommendations?

Looking at that list, I see you do not have a Magnum revolver. Perhaps
something like a Ruger, Colt or S&W in one of the Magnum calibers with
a large frame would be a good choice.

Do you have some particular use in mind, or are you solely after "cool factor"?

I presume you're after a handgun?

If you're thinking you'll be getting a high end 1911 down the road anyway, why not go with a different platform for now? I really like my Witness Limited 10, and I don't think many would argue the cool factor of these guns:

It's right about your $1k budget

Beach Nut, I have a 500 Magnum S&W revolver.... that is magnum enough for me lol

I am not necessarily after just a handgun; anything would work! I really like the EAA Witness Limited 10mm.... VERY COOL!!!! I am looking a bit more into that right now!

For a while I was looking into getting a nice lightweight short magnum deer rifle, but I can hunt deer with my A bolt stalker II 300 RUM, or my SKS, or my Beowulf 50 so I kinda figured that would not be the best move to add variety to my collection. I even thought about getting a Benelli Nova for Turkey hunting but my Saiga 12 with a full choke works wonders.

That is why I decided to go with something unique.

As VA27 pointed out Randall did make a left handed version of the M1911. Unfortunately they have been out of business for quite some time now and they didn't make many of the left hand models. It's also going to be somewhat expensive. There's one on Gunbroker and the Buy It Now price is $2795.

VA27, sorry that I did not explain more about the Wilson Combat 1911. The only reason that I mentioend the left handed issue is not because I want a left handed 1911, but I wanted one with abmi safety. I actually found the perfect Wilson Combat except it did not have the abmi safety. I found a Wilson Combat with the ambi safety, but it did not have the speed chute and reverse crown cut barrel. First world problems lol!!!!!

I am not into AK-47's. I love them, but just don't care to own one. I actually purchased my SKS over an AK-47 as my SKS was my first hunting rifle. At first, I kind of wanted one, but once I purchased my other AR style rifles such as my PTR 91 and 50 Beowulf my desire for one went away pretty quick. I went all out on my 50 Beowulf as I put an ACOG scope on it. Also, any type of .223 caliber semi auto simply does not tickle my pickle as I have 2 evil black rifles already. My friend just got himself a Daniel Defense rifle so I got to spend some time with it.... beautiful rifle which shoots great... still don't care for one.

Nice collection you got there. Personally, I think you could use a good all metal full size 9mm. Such as 92FS, CZ or BHP.

Rifle wise, maybe a 308 battle rifle. The m1a's are mostly out of your range. But a CETME is right there. With room for accessories and ammo.

You might get better responses if you posted this in the handgun forum instead of the rifle forum. Some handgunners may never see your post here. Heck someone over there may have what you are looking for and be willing to sell it.

my daily ccw is a wilson combat supergrade compact i bought about 10 years ago before nighthawk split off. it's a great pistol and maybe the new has worn off, but i sure wouldn't wait 24 months for one! geez!

ambi safety and speed chute are must haves

With the mention of a 9mm handgun, I was actually at one time seriously considering an EMP 9mm for carry use since the smallest handgun I have for carry is the Glock 23 and for summer carry it is sometimes a bit too bulky. I read too many conflicting reviews on the EMP 9mm, but it looks like a cool gun..... kinda a 1911, but not really.

I am just as interested in rifles as I am in handguns!
I know, 24 months is nuts! I am happy for Wilson Combat that they are doing good business. From what I have heard about their customer service, they deserve to be doing great in business! I am still dying for one!!!

2 thoughts

1st... MN and a whole lot of ammo. To be ultra cool it must be a Finn. (Actually MNs are the non ultra cool for most unless you're in the know) ;)

2nd... buy a Wilson Combat from wherever (but I don't know what options your heart is set on so...) and order an ambi safety from Wilson, have it installed?

a 3rd non solicited thought... in the 1911 category (even tho we're in rifle country) might be a GunCrafter No Name.

Then I would suggest putting your name on the list and waiting for one. Rather than getting the quick fix, which never scratches the itch. The long wait only sweetens the result. However, I would also suggest other options. There are some excellent custom gunsmiths that can build you a one of a kind 1911 without spending more money AND deliver it much quicker than Wilson. Were it me, I'd strongly consider Jim Stroh. He's a hell of a nice guy and you won't find a better gunsmith. NOTHING is more cool than a custom gun built EXACTLY how YOU want it. ;)

The thing that makes me feel uneasy is Wilson Combat is requiring a $500 deposit. I completely understand the need for a deposit before making a custom handgun, but requiring the customer to wait 2+ years is not exactly making me comfortable. A thousand things (although very unlikely) could happen for example... what if Wilson Combat sells their company or whatever and they decide not to honor my deposit!?!?! Again, I know that case is highly unlikely, but I always play the devils advocate when it comes to $3,000 plus dollars.

I wonder how the accuracy of a Alpha Precision 1911 would compare to a Wilson Combat? I know it is not everyone's cup of tea, but I was thinking that a custom 1911 with pre-ban ivory grips would be awesome. It sounds very "fancy", but I can assure you that I have seen several in person and it looks totally bad@$$!!!!!

Bear in mind that Jim Stroh's shop is a one man operation. All the work performed is done by Jim himself. Whereas Wilson has a team of gunsmiths of varying skill levels. I'm not saying anything bad about Wilson, as their reputation is well earned but I would expect Stroh's work to be better. Like I said, it will be built exactly how YOU want it. Rather than choosing from a list of preset packages. You'll get more gun for less money.

That's not a bad proposition at all. Most shops would require your gun and 50% down to put you on the list. `Tis the nature of the beast in the custom gun world.

Been thinking about having Jim massage my Springfield Range Officer, having it engraved, finished in charcoal blue and perhaps some ivory for it as well.

instead of pre-ban ivory, look at mammoth ivory. google mammoth scrimshaw. it's relatively cheap, oddly enough, but very cool stuff

heck, if you get super desperate, send me a pm. i could be persuaded by large piles of cash to part with my wilson :)

I have given it thought about purchasing a used gun, but it just kills me not knowing exactly how many rounds have been put through it. Someone posts "Brand new 1911 with only 200 rounds through it" and the bore has been worn out completely lol.

Taliv, what model Wilson do you have?

I have yet to see a worn out gun. I would guess a worn out gun would show it's miles on the outside pretty well.
