NEF New Owner - Opinions on care?

Bought a 12 Ultra (the ones that are thick and heavy and look like a canon or mortar launcher) a while back.

Noticed the metal is not gloss and not matte - but mare porous. My first cleaning and application of oil after getting it home showed rust-colored deposits on the rag although there's no visible rust.

What do you use to protect the metal in an NEF (or H&R) firearm?

The regular oils of choice? Renaissance wax? Seems like ren wax could be an option...?

Any oil will do.

Make sure the action pin underneath has just a little oil on it, it will wear less. This is where it will wear out and need attention, in sixty or eighty years, sooner if you slam it shut with force.

If you keep it clean and lightly oiled it will not rust. About any product will work, even sewing machine oil.

Most NEF products do soak up a little more oil than some others, but they do not rust more in my opinion.

Paste wax is going to be a PITA on rough metals. I use turtle was on my guns that have a polished finish. If you have ever got paste wax on a black plastic bumper you have an idea of how it's going to work out on the rough metal on your gun. Just use any quality gun oil in a spray can. The spray can will save you a lot of elbow grease.

I've used it on any number of 870 Express guns over the years, and can't say it has harmed the appearance of things much if any. Don't know if the NEF is any rougher than an Express or not... but I don't buff it, just let it wear off.

I've never had any issue with waxing either my express .410 or an H&R 12 ga Pardner I inherited from my pop. Both have been used for years and hold up really well. I've used Johnson's in the past, but have been using Meguiar's wax for at least the last decade.

So far I've been giving my NEF coats of Eezox (my compound of choice). Might try the waxes (I've got all those mentioned here so far) in a small space to see how they do.

It just doesn't seem that liquids are effective enough on this type of metal. Again I don't see visible rust, just a rust color on the cleaning rag after an application of Eezox. Only gun that does this.

Hope the wax helps...that was the info I was looking for!

Lots and lots of oil. The finish is Parkerized. Wax is also a option.

Interesting thought. I could see that. I did strip the metal with brake cleaner that first cleaning (as I always do with a new gun before applying my oil).

What was odd was I saw the rust color on a second application of oil later (still unfired). I guess I am assuming its oxidation. Could be some sort of very cantankerous factory preservative (grease?) though. Is that common from NEF?

I was going to say Eezox too. The ONLY thing that will keep a Kimber from rusting in a heart beat. I used to keep it in an oil bath when I got it to keep it from rusting and had to fix everything that was wrong with it, but Eezox finally did the trick. Still rusts, but not anywhere near what it used to.
