It ain't just the 870. My Mossy 500 circa 1990 doesn't care for Winchester 3" steel hi speed, don't know about other Winchester, but it appears to be the brand. My Mossy shoots the 2 3/4" just fine, go figure. But, using steel wool on the chamber helped a lot. I did it by hand, took forever, but it helped out. The gun now fires Winchester, but I still avoid the 3" stuff.
I shoot 2 3/4" hi speed or use Kent fasteel when I can find it. The gun is a waterfowl gun, so it only eats steel shot. But, yeah, the Winchester stuff can be problematic.
