New 870 woes

It ain't just the 870. My Mossy 500 circa 1990 doesn't care for Winchester 3" steel hi speed, don't know about other Winchester, but it appears to be the brand. My Mossy shoots the 2 3/4" just fine, go figure. But, using steel wool on the chamber helped a lot. I did it by hand, took forever, but it helped out. The gun now fires Winchester, but I still avoid the 3" stuff.

I shoot 2 3/4" hi speed or use Kent fasteel when I can find it. The gun is a waterfowl gun, so it only eats steel shot. But, yeah, the Winchester stuff can be problematic.

I'll add, my newish mossy 535 doesn't have a hitch with the Winchester stuff, nor does my Winchester auto, so yeah, you can say "it's the gun". BUT, a rough chamber is fixable. Maybe you shouldn't have to 'fix' it, but hey, it's the modern times. It's a bargain priced gun, not high end.

Heck, I've owned 2 1911s and BOTH were extremely ammo picky. So, I mean, if any gun, shotguns included, is ammo picky, either smooth what needs to be smoothed or just feed it what it likes.

Please explain how a Wingmaster is smother or cycles and better then any other 870. The only two parts make any contact in the receiver. The forend tube assembly is the first one. This slides in channels in the receiver walls. The timing cuts on the forend tube assembly also engage the shell latches. So, being the exact same forend tube assembly is used on the Wingmaster, the Police and the Express (check the parts list and you will see they only make one, so of course it is used on all these models). Also, being they only make one left shell latch and one right shell latch and these are used in all the 12ga models, then how can one model be any smoother then another. The other contact is the breech bolt and slide which cocks the hammer back and also engages the carrier dog. Since these are also all the same parts used in all models there is just no explanation for the claims that one is smoother then another.

It is simply in your minds. They are built from the exact same parts. I will give you food for thought that most people fire a Wingmaster that has been around for a while and is thus well broken in. Then they purchase a new Express and wonder why it does not seem as smooth. Both will feel exactly the same after the exact same round count. They have to as they are built with the exact same parts.

You have to cycle a Wingmaster and a Express side by side.

The Wingmaster is slick and effortless during the cycle. The Express takes more effort and sounds like the action is full of grit.

In this case you get what you pay for.

Got both. Try mine and you might say the Express is a bit smoother.

For one thing, the receivers of some 870s (not the Express receivers) are vibra-honed to smooth out sharp edges and rough spots before finishing. If you compare the internals of the receivers and look very closely, you can see this.

some sure are fussy about this. ai&p tact. got fussy on the 12th thread, admitted that he did not know scotch brite is an abrasive used on steel and now says that "it is simple in your mind". interesting. isn't everything in your mind?

No. "All is well" is in Obama's mind. :what:
All of my shotguns will eat the Winchester Universals. I buy them because they are cheap and the results downrange are entirely acceptable if I do my part. The 1100s will rip the bases on a lot of them, but they do cycle. Not all of my guns would always do this. You can complain, buy better ammo, or fix it. Your choice.

Sorry, all receivers are vibra honed. All of them. Been to the factory and watched the process multiple times.

After cleaning them, I can't pick any of them up by the front stock without the action closing, no matter how careful I am, old or new. This includes my brand new Super Mag. that has only had a hand full of shells run through it.

Yes, so you know every 870 receiver production and finishing run. Sure I believe that . . .

There are rougher receiver internals (like significantly sharper edges) on Express guns. Almost anyone can see this when they look closely.

True. Might snag a cleaning cloth or even cut a finger, but does not affect cycling of action -- including how smooth the action is.

Also, to address the rough receiver internals, I've stripped the receiver, and used Lansky stones and emery cloth to knock off sharp edges and other objectionable rough surfaces. Makes cleaning a nicer experience IMO for the 3 Express that have come my way.
