The 338rcm is a really intriguing cartridge and, since you reload, probably the better choice. Better bullet selection than the 8mm 325wsm. I'd still recommend the Ruger Guide Gun as the platform.

A man could be happy his whole life east of the Mississippi with only a .358 Winchester.

30-06 for me. Easy to find guns chambered in the old 06 and ammo is easy to find as well. If one reloads the 06 is amazingly versatile with bullet weights ranging from 110gr to 220gr.

Another vote for the 358 winchester, built on a short action in the 6 to 6 1/2 lb. range.

Energy you say ?

Like the handloading.....

Why not go 458 Socom ?

Certainly not "vanilla", thunderous amounts of energy, and bullet weights from 250grs up to a whopping 600- In both eco-friendly all copper from Barnes and Hornady, Excellent cup and core heavyweights from good 'ole Remington, and even Cast slugs of your own- this rifle does what many can't, and does it in a compact and lightweight AR package with manageable recoil.

Yogi isn't armoured. You should look into ballistics too. Bullet diameter doesn't mean much. A .444 Marlin, for example, is big in diameter(.429" bullets) but isn't exactly a 300 yard cartridge. A 240 grain Remington factory bullet drops 31.5" out at 300.
In any case, there is no beast in North America that needs a magnum of any kind to kill with one shot.

Can't use semi auto in PA

If the cartridge itself interests you, you can get them in single-shot actions, obviously not in an AR at that point !

However, at that point you might as well get a 45-70.

Certainly not vanilla, will kill anything that walks within the borders, for sure.

As a kid I always wanted a 35 Whelen and really thought the .375 H&H was cool, too. I suppose the 35 Whelen probably doesn't do anything the '06 can't do but the bigger bullets could be an advantage inside 200 yards. As sweet at the .375 H&H would be it's probably serious overkill for black bear.
