New gun bans voted down in Switzerland

Seems like the left in Switzerland is getting annoyed again, after the evil right wingers won the votation about unconditionally deporting aliens with criminal records.

They launched a ballot initiative against gun ownership that would have placed loads of onerous rules on the law-abiding gun owners in Switzerland (gun registration, complete ban on pump-action and full auto guns, having to display a 'genuine need' to posess guns etc), all in the name of 'crime prevention' and 'suicide prevention'.

However, as of 13:55 CET, 13 cantons have already refused that ballot initiative, which makes it impossible for the launchers of that initiative to win - for that, they would need at least 13 cantons to accept it, and ontop, the majority of the voters also voted it down, which, even if the large cities accepted it with a 100% vote in favor of that initiative - something which is not going to happen, would not help them.

The gun prohibition lesson from UK is that all it takes is a loud minority of gun haters to prevail over a silent minority of gun owners, when the majority of people are either indifferent or accept the existing gun laws as adequate.

Gun control can seldomn be justified on the basis of cost-benefit analysis; which is why US gun banners push emotional hot buttons, invoke imaginary scenarios or rely on ideology (ranting about Hobbes and Webber).

Ironically, some in Europe see pump-action shotguns as "gang-banger" weapons while semi-autos are seen as... wait for it... more sporting... This was discussed in a thread a number of years back about gun ownership in France. It has its roots in the prevalence of pump shotguns being cocked wontonly in action flicks. I kid you not.

Fabrique Nationale sporting semi-autos in Europe probably outnumber pump-actions and have been seen for generations as sporting firearms and not as gangster weapons. Sad fact that laws are often based on bias and pre-conceived assumptions. In parts of Europe--UK, Finland especially--silencers are seen as proper sports accessories, but are considered "gangster weapons" under the US 1934 NFA.

I have my personal suspicions on that ban of pump-action firearms - it's got something to do with a phallic symbol, rather than the real danger of it. One of the worst shootings was the Safari shooting earlier this decade where it turned out that not legal pump actions were used, but illegally smuggled AKs.

Supposedly the gun regs were to cut the suicide rate. Not having a gun at one's disposal will only cause the person to use other means. Can you say drugs, cars etc. I am in Alaska at present and a woman just committed suicide by pill. Plenty of guns available here.

Full auto isn't practical for fighting when semi auto is around, pump action isn't as good as a modern semi auto, yet they want to ban them. Anti gunners are more afraid of the look and the sound than the actual guns purpose.
