I saw a shooting show on one of the sportsman channels a while back that was dealing with this issue. they had double sided sheet rock walls set up and shot them with pistols shotguns and an ar. I was very surprised when the ar had the least penetration. they had two walls set up one behind the other and every thing they shot hit the second wall with large pieces of projectiles. The AR rounds fragmented at the first wall because of the speed they were traveling and hit the second wall with very small pieces of bullet.

I'm intrigued by the idea that .223 Rem hyper-velocity cartridges seem to be the magic bullet for defense against threats but don't penetrate more than two layers of drywall. I'm not surprised by it... just didn't consider it.

I've searched for awhile and can't find information regarding OTHER calibers that might perform similarly, e.g., hyper-velocity .30-06 with ultralight (HP?) bullets.

Does anyone have data regarding OTHER calibers that behave like the .223 Rem?

This Coach Gun can be legitimately purchased in USA with the right paper work from BATF. Nope, not mine. Photo was sent by a friend.

Depends on the state, I suspect.

my dad has 45 yr. in LE and He has seen and had to do thing that most never will and in a home you will not see a shot over 20 feet unless you live an a relay big house and he told me that #6&#8 at under 20 feet out of most shot gun unless a open choke Will drop just about any one . there can be things that will effect any circumstances and all you can do is be prepaid for the average . I asked him what would you prefer to have , he laughingly said a hand grenade . but short of that at close rang a shotgun with #6 shot , as for the chance it dos not stop them , he said that you alway prepare to shoot again !! thanks I'm out of this . and yes I have had to defend my grandmother and my self and a man lost his life , the experience is highly over rated !!

frangible .223 was shown to penetrate fewer walls than 00 buck or even fmj pistol rounds on the box of truth. fmj though, eh, i'm sure it would blow right on through

I've seen gel reports of fragmenting ammo that penetrated through walls just fine. These frangible rounds that you speak of, what sort of performance do they have inside ballistics gel compared with a standard fragmenting/yawing round?

It sounds to me like it may be a varmint round that is going to penetrate enough to kill a squirrel, but may only go a couple of inches through a person and miss their organs entirely.
