New Mexico has a 7 day waiting period coming

I've always loved New Mexico... it's much like California in that it has almost one of everything... but I just can't stand their politics.

US DoJ prison surveys found that nationwide 91% of firearms using offenders acquired the gun they carried or used from non-commercial sources (including drug dealers, fences, smugglers, burglary, theft, gang members, etc) presumably without waiting periods.

You beat me to it. It's already been shown that waiting periods do not have a positive effect on reducing violent crime, and in some respects, a negative effect on public safety.

Poverty. Its one of the poorest of states that are dependent on Federal dollars.

Indeed. A lot of public land, a lot of reservations, and no industry.

As a kid growing up in NYC, I always dreamed about places like NM, WY, or CO where there were wide open spaces, little restrictions. and people and government with a different mind set regarding personal freedom.

So sad that all of those things are so rapidly disappearing.

Shoot... look at Texas. If you were to believe the stereotype, everyone carries a gun, drives a pickup truck, and has at least 100 head of cattle in the back 40... but the reality of politics means the typically liberal metro areas dictate legislation and restrictions. Texas is big... but Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston dictate the political trend by virtue of population.

Hey, I was a kid, I still believed in dreams.

NY is the same way, the city dictates what the rest of the state does, despite totally different environments. Like state legislators in the Bronx thinking they know what’s best for people living in the Adirondacks.

Everything that California and New York are doing New Mexico and Colorado are going to try it.

Polis (Colorado) tends to be moderate on most things but he has signed every pro gun control bill that's crossed his desk.

Colorado now has a 3-day waiting period. They're going to pass a law Banning firearms in "sensitive" places. City Parks, Political Rallys, Bars (Most of the bars that you would have to worry about somebody having a gun in already wand you at the door). Churches, unless the church explicitly posts that concealed carry is allowed there. I have to ask this question, isn't the church a private entity? Should they be allowed to make their own decision as to whether or not people can carry a gun on their premises? Is it really the place of the government to ban it across the board and make the church jump through hoops to allow people to carry on premises?

And they're apparently going to pass a bill requiring police to enforce the 15 round magazine limit. As in go to gun stores and they find a magazine over 15 rounds Prosecute the gun store owner

do you know what other gun bills made it through?
As of yesterday it was the only one but still 5 days to go in this session so who knows what else will get through. This is the most benign of any of them proposed this year.

The Left has ran NM for 90yrs +.
Actually since it's been a state except for the 8 years Gary Johnson was governor. He was a businessman, not a politician, and vetoed a ton of legislation that made it to his desk. Sometime after his administration was over he proposed that the state should legalize marijuana causing a huge negative outcry. Now it's legal and the government brags about how much tax revenue it brings in. Little Hobbs is in the top 5 sellers. Of course it's only a 5 mile drive from Texas. :)

(Born and rai

Thanks to the oil & gas industry with Lea County being the largest producer in the US and Eddy County nipping closely at it heels plus federal money the state is rolling in dough at this point in time and has been for several years. Only 5 counties in NM contribute to the budget. All the rest are negative. Oil & gas provides almost 50% of the state's budget but the counties that produce it get a very low percentage of return compared to the rest of the state. NM government is highly inept at using the money it gets to solve it's problems plus it's been corrupt since there has been a NM. The latest thing is the now gone speaker of the house and his wife are being investigated for fraud involving millions. Since the current administration we have seen our education rate drop to the lowest in the nation, poverty level increase, high increase in crime, and child welfare services are a total disaster.

I stay here because of all the state and government land available for me to roam as I please, my family all live close by, property taxes are much better than next door in Texas where I originated, and I'm just too damned old to move.

anybody know where NM HB 137 is at?
HB137 is still alive, but on life support. With only 24 hours left in the session it could be passed, but hopefully not.

As to the 7-day waiting period, it was originally a 14 business day with no exemptions. It is now 7 calendar days, and has exemptions for LEO's, CCW's, and between immediate family members. Additionally, the "no guns at polling places" was amended to exempt CCW's as long as the weapon is concealed, and only applies to those voting or working at the polls. In other words, if you inadvertently pass within 100 feet of a polling place, but are not engaged in election business, it doesn't apply to you. The sponsor wanted this law to avoid voter intimidation, and even though we already have a law against that he still wanted it shoved down our throats.

Sorry for your troubles. I always liked vacationing in NM. Mostly, in Santa Fe, fly fishing in the Pecos River. But like so many other desirable places in the US, it was already being infested by yellow bellied invaders from communist occupied states.

A downright shame.
I can't stand being in Santa Fe and especially Albuquerque. I did enjoy fishing the upper Pecos and Mora River for several years. Hearing gun shots in the Mora campground at night was a little unnerving though it was mostly likely someone shooting at a coon. Little rascals were a pain unless you kep you trash bag up high where they couldn't get to it.
anybody know where NM HB 137 is at?

There was nothing in today's paper. It's time for the noon news so I will listen to see if it's mentioned.

Here is the latest status. Still not voted on the House Floor, which means that the Senate hasn't even begun to consider it. Probably dead, but this is, after all, New Mexico, home of the "Curse of Lew Wallace".

And, for those of you wondering about the "Curse of Lew Wallace":

``All calculations based on our experiences elsewhere fail in New Mexico.''

FL is the one party hellscape in which Republicans are just 1970s Southern Jim Crow Democrats. We are not the gunshine state by any means. Hell, we've had mandatory waiting periods since the early 90s. We're the only Southern and only Republican state in the nation to ban open carry and have a under 21 purchase ban.

He also reneged on the promised he made to pardon Billy the kid.

Our son came in just as the noon news was starting so I missed out on the news. I did get my alarm system straightened out and shut up though. It makes a buzzing sound ever so often when it has a problem which gets annoying. I can't get around good enough or stand up long enough to do it all myself. I have started a search for a replacement as I have had enough of this one. This one keeps telling me batteries are low when they are not and loses communication with sensors. It's old enough to grow a beard so may be just wearing out.

A few years ago my wife suggested visiting Santa Fe (almost rhymes with Tina Fe(y) :( ), but I wasn't interested in visiting another satellite of Denver (I've recently stayed there on business), ie the Mothership Colony of California.

A 7-day waiting period easily could allow a woman to be denied adequate protection against an ex-, or other stalker psycho.
There might be evidence that women have died, children orphaned because of such laws while they wait and wait.
