New Pietta Frontier Sheriff's .45Colt

New addition and a new stump. I bought one of the Springfield HiPowers a while back, shot two mags through it and decided it didn't do anything for me. So today I traded it for a Pietta Frontier .45Colt. These are really nice guns. The action is slick, the grips are wonderfully shaped and have a little grain in them. The pics don't do the case colors justice. Shoots good for windage, got plenty of front sight to zero it.

How much for the Stump? lol

A very nice looking sixgun. I too have a .45 Colt Pietta SAA clone, the Pistolero. I like it but I wish it had the steel grip frame that yours does. You may want to test your chamber throats. Mine were pretty snug and under the .4525" I had read that they were supposed to be. Best of luck with it.

The nice thing about throats that are too small (and .452 is too small for my cast bullets) is, the undersized throats can be easily enlarged.

This was actually a new shop in town. They're trying to specialize in "old west" gear. After talking to them about it before, I took several holsters and sheaths to show them to see if they might want to put some on their shelves. This one was test fitted with the Pietta before I even asked about trading for it. He wanted the holster, I got the sixgun instead. :D

I really don't care for the grip on that gun but that is immaterial as I am not the one that is going to use it. The holster is really nice though. I am going to have to try another in this style. I have made enough SA holsters over the years that I won't mess up the fit like I did on my one try at a stamped holster for a DA revolver.

Did you work a deal for them to sell your leather?

On a trial basis. I left two with them. After thinking about it, I don't expect it to go anywhere. It's a small shop in a small town. It's kinda tucked out of the way. I had some hope when I went there the first time, as it was just after they opened. Now two months later, nothing in the shop has changed and they only have a handful of guns. They also started smoking in there all day and that's a big turnoff for most people. I told them I was going to make more for their shop but I now I seriously doubt I will. If they don't sell, which they probably won't, I'll never be able to get the smell out of them.

I thought about talking with my LGS to see if he would put some of my holsters on display. Then after thinking about it some more I decided I didn't really want to get that involved in leather work again. I have had several people ask me why I didn't make 1911 grips and sell them after seeing some I had made. I came to the same conclusion with that too.

I have known the owner of my LGS for so long I don't remember when we first met. Sometime in the '70's I think when he was a salesman for an oilfield supply company. He has always smoked and still does although he has had 3 heart attacks and has so many stents I have lost count of the number. To top it off he is seriously overweight, gets no exercise at all, and eats all the wrong foods. One of these days someone is either going to walk into the store to find him dead behind the counter or at home in his recliner. His wife died just a couple of months ago and his son followed in her foot steps just a couple of weeks ago. Both smoked and were quite overweight. You would think he would get the hint. The smoke smell from anything he sells does not last long after it is exposed to our sun and wind for several hours.

It sure as hell is. One RC model airplane shop I used to deal with was a smelly place. The owner smoked and everything you bought from there smelled like smoke. If you went in there for 10 minutes you smelled like smoke. Your clothes smelled like smoke and so did your hair. I quit going in there.

Great looking gun and holster by the way. I didn't know Pietta was making SA Colt clones.

The thing is, I want to make holsters but I mostly want to make what I want to make. I can't keep them all and thought having a local shop that could sell them would be a good outlet, in addition to the Etsy store. Just wish the circumstances were better.

On another note, the Pietta is now a .45ACP. I swapped the cylinder from my all blue 4¾" convertible and it works perfectly. Doesn't have the same level of polish but it makes things interesting.

The ejector rod makes the acp brass clear the cylinder fully?

Man, the colors on that Pietta frame are gorgeous!

Thanks a lot CraigC. Now you have me looking at Pietta single actions. I would like the all steel with 7.5" barrel and spare cylinder for 45acp to go with it. But I need another new gun like I need a hole in the head. Matter of fact if I buy another new gun my wife will provide the hole free gratis.

So far I haven't found what I would like in stock. Thats probably a good thing. Does anyone know if Pietta will sell a second cylinder in 45acp to you if you want one?

That is nice.

Years ago I made custom western belts. Pick your pattern, letter style for your name, dye color or colors for the background, type of buckle. etc. I did this while working a 50 hour week job. Throw in some billfolds/wallets which I soon hated and a purse or three. I finally got to where I didn't want to ever make another and quit. After several years I went back to making one for myself or a present for someone now and then. I still enjoy the craft but only with what I want to make and when I want to make it. Once in a while a holster or belt, my choice and style, and that is it. Shaky hands that pills no longer always make not shaky doesn't help either.

Like the look of the round butt SAA, but it really needs to be on a short barrel. Not sure how I feel about that.
