A friend called today and wondered if I might be interested in his late brother's Ruger. He brought it by. Turns out it was bought in about 1978 or so and is a new, unfired, in the original yellow box with cardboard outer box, 4 3/4" .357/9mm blue convertible NM Blackhawk. Fly in the ointment is a set of Jay Scott fake stag grips.
Settled on a fair price and ha gave me two curios for display, a Burgo cheap@ss 22 short as sold by K Mart in the sixties for about $14 and a stainless Sterling .22 auto, nib, with spare magazine.
Now, do I shoot the Ruger? I don't buy stuff to sit in the safe but this thing has been sitting nearly fifty years all alone and unloved. Maybe I will put it next to the ss Blackhawk 200 year 357 that was dad's. Who knows, maybe I will get a 327 two tone Bearcat out of them.

I wouldnt be driving fenceposts with it.....but shooting it wont hurt it.

Sure i would shoot it. In fact i have been keeping an eye out for a .357/9mm.

Congrats on your good fortune!

As far as I know Ruger hasn’t chaged their process in manufacturing the Blackhawk so one from 78 is the same as one off the line today. So what are you trying to preserve?

Preserving nothing. First "new" gun I've had in years and really neat that it is forty years new. I normally buy used, really used, and look for abused Rugers so I can send them in and get a like new one back. I'll shoot this one. Soon. I'm also going to contact Ruger to see how much a 6 1/2" barrel swap would cost me. I have a 4 3/4" already..actually three, a 45 conv, 357 ss, and a 44 sp flattop.
Heck, I already know the load: Skelton's 358156gc on top of 14.5 H2400. Served me well for years in several handguns and my converted 92 Winchester rifle.
Thanks for the encouragement. I have no "safe queens". Some don't get much attention, like my late Brother's 3 screw Super which could be passed off as new, but they all take a turn in rotation.
