New toy Rossi R95

Thats exactly why I don't own a bore scope. It would drive me nuts if I found my bore had marks in it, If it looks good looking down the bore with a bore light thats good enough for me.

My local Academy has an R95 I have looked at and I thought it was a good looking gun. They want $799 for theirs and Buds has them for $718 and I have a $10 off coupon. If I got one I would put a 2-7 Vortex on it. I have a 2-7 Nikon on my Marlin 30-30. Thats about perfect for me. Plus I am so well set up to shoot and reload 30-30. I will never run out of ammo. at least not in my lifetime.

Thats a good looking gun and I hope you can get a good range report with some targets posted of the groups. I think I have watched every YT video posted on that gun and they are all positive.
Yea to the 2x7. So many uses and the shortest mounts possible. Since the stock is for open sights. We have a Bushnell store in the city so that's what I've gotten. I did try a Hawke 2x7 from a gunshop and it's good. My best three are Vortex diamondback from Cabela's ( bass pro yuck) good to come across another Vortex fan.

Rossi R95 was a pleasant finding. How would this help in downsizing. Dang I have a coffee can of 30 30 brass. What a bunch of bums

I bought a 500ct box of once fired 30-30 brass of GB many years ago for around $40. Plus I have many boxes of brass I have fired once from factory loads. I think I have around 1500 pieces of brass, around 1200 or more 30-30 bullets and have started casting a Lee 170gr flat point bullet I haven't tested yet. Plus I have around 700 rounds of loaded and factory ammo. So I'm good for a while. I even have a 100ct box of nickle plated Remington brass in 30-30 and 30-06 I forgot about bought long ago from Midway. Its a round I focused on a long time ago.

I bought my first 30-30 long ago when Whites Auto was going out of business around 1984 for around $115. I wish I would have kept it. I have my dads Marlin 30-30 and a Glenfield 30-30 made around 1969 with half magazine tube. Its a little worn on the outside but the bore is like new. At least it looks new without a bore scope. No matter. Its a shooter. But someone must have hunted and carried that gun a lot. The blue is worn on the barrel and the blue on the receiver is worn thin with a little freckling. It had a deep scratch on the bottom of the forend so I stripped the wood, sanded and refinished it. It looks good now. Its just a perfect hunting gun you don't have to worry about banging up.

I have been a 30-30 fan for a long time. I like that it does it work with around 30grs of powder with a simple, cheap (used to be) cup and core bullet or even lead bullets if you find a load it likes. And the case is one of the best for lead bullets with its long neck and thinner brass that will expand to seal the bore even at lower pressures.

So many wish I kept it stories is almost sad. Your story is a good one. A 30 30 that looks like my 1895 marlin is attractive. My first hand loads ever was 30 30 with a Lee loader because of a story in a book. 170gr hdy works in my iffy bore Ted Williams. 165 gas check Lee and 5744 is OK. Did have a new marlin 24 inch stainless gray laminated stock 30 30. I have three bottles of LVR from that project. Wish I still had that cool rifle.

Went to a sporting goods store today and saw 2 r95s , one in 30-30 and a 45-70. Both were really nice with good wood to metal fitment. And at $839 I thought I might have to beg my wife for some advance funds for the 45-70. But, alas. I am in town for an operation tomorrow and it wouldn't be a good time to buy one. Maybe next month.

The 3 versions of the r95's you can't go wrong with either!

Man when I read “New Toy” I half expected an old Arisaka but you really did mean NEW. I’m shocked at the tag for what we are seeing, that’s a very nice rifle and a stone cold bargain. Excited to see if it grows a scope but that dot looks plenty handy.
Arisakas got expensive....... really annoyed me.....i could use one for an idea ive got too...

They are nicely made, impressively so. Id have stuck a scope on it first to test the accuracy if nothing else, but i could only find one of my 336 basses lol...gonna try shoot today well see how i can do with the dot.

I ordered an R95 from Buds yesterday. They were priced at $718 and when checking Buds again I saw the price was just over $650. And I have a $10 Buds coupon so I ordered the gun. I paid by check to get the lessor price from using a card. I just got the check mailed off and Buds should have it by next Monday. So in a couple of weeks or less I will have the gun. I bought a Vortex 2-7x32 scope a couple of days ago. That will go on the gun once I have made sure the open sights are set.

I am excited about the gun. I sold two BP guns and a BP rifle barrel to pay for this gun. I already have a couple of scope bases and a new set of rings.

Small update!
I got my reloading stuff today, gonna load up 20-30rnds and maybe ahoot then sunday morning.

I also installed the spring kit (marlin 336 parts). Both the main spring and the latch spring dropped right in. While i had the stock off i also tinkered with the lever safety spring a bit.
Gun now runs really slick and the trigger pulls dropped to 3.5lbs.....from 6/7? Ish? .....i forget, but heavy

Nice, looks to see if there's a sharp burr on the frame where the loading gate is, the pictures I seen looks like the beveled it some there so maybe on. Some guys seem to really hate the marlin triggers but the 9 or so I've owned were great and broke clean.

The r95s triggers got a little creep, but its smooth and breaks crisply. The weight was higher than i liked, but that was my only real complaint.
Loading gate and the loading gate area in the frame are both nicely finished. Gates stiff and will pinch the crap out if you, but nothing to scratch or cut.

Looks like I can see a rough area on the inside of the gate. If it scratches brass then polish it with worn 600 or 1000 and oil wrapped on a dowel the size of the round. Just the inside that contacts the brass.

The issue with Marlin triggers, at least for me, is the trigger flop, tink, tink, tink. A little grease stops it or a RPP or WWG tigger. Or ignore it.

Ill check when i get home, couldnt feel anything there but ot does look like theres a rough patch.

Ill check the trigger too....its got some play, but i don't THINK its floppy at all......i dont remember the marlins ive used being floppy either tho lol.

I do not know if the Rossi clones inherited the Marlin Trigger Flop? I never knew either until decades ago the Flop was pointed out to me and thereafter I noticed it constantly . Sometimes ignorance is bliss. As far as the trigger pull and feel itself, my guns are fine.

I changed the triangle my self to an rpr and changed the springs also at that time. Pull weight before was ~5.5# then went down to ~2.5ish. I didn't do a safety delete as some do. Added a wwg bear proof extractor. All changes were made to the gun in my avatar.

You're right, there's a very slight Burr, can't feel it but I will scratch My nail a little bit.
And yeah, trigger rattles lol!
I guess it's just not something that registers for me, didn't even notice it till you mentioned it.

I don't remember what factory pull weight was on my sbl, but checked the cb model and it's @ 3.65# w/factory trigger parts. The sbl w/ranger point precision no-flop trigger, palo verde gunworks spring kit w/ plunger averages 1.78# (the gun in my avatar). Just relaying this info if you're wanting a change on your trigger?

What's the trigger pull like, average or lite?

Original was 6+. Ater spring kit and tinkering its 3.5.
I might change the trigger eventually, but i ran out of play money for now lol.
I have found that im getting a light strike now and then with the spring kit, so im going to shim it and try again.

I shot 30rnds today to form some AI brass. I checked water weight after forming (ill get a bit more on the next shot also, shoulders are still a little roundy)
And were averaging 46.5, 3gr up from the 43.5 the stock starline comes in at.
This isnt thr most aggressive of the improved 30-30/38-55 family (think the BRMs might be....i still have 6.5BRM brass), but its cool to get some extra capacity and a neat looking round.

I also saw another r95 at the range today, thought that was cool.

That looks good, be interesting what a full case of leverlution or cfe223 would do. Maybe do some fire forming if you have some fast pistol powder like red/blue dot and some cream of wheat to save on powder and bullets. Can't remember if I still have a 30cal mold if I do ill see about making you some bullets to try out next time I'm up at my dads.

Unfortunately ive given away all my faster pistol powders, otherwise i probably would. I don't really mind burning components at this point. One more fireforming trip and i should have enough brass to last me a while......i should have some preliminary loads started in the next week or three.

I alwo realized that to do any decent accuracy testing i do need a scope.....so ill order a mount and slap a scope on for that at least.
