Temp was -3 f when I was driving there... during the course of the day it warmed up to a balmy 12 f. The 22 ARs had trouble cycling, as did some regular ARs. My Colt SP-1 ran flawlessly with both brass and steel ammo (I felt bad about the steel but I wanted to see if it would run, and I didn't want to worry too much about policing up the casings out of the ice).
I greased it lightly with some regular moly wheel bearing grease and used no other lube. I have never really sighted it in but it did okay; I was still hitting low at 200 yds but was able to get hits by putting the silhouettes atop the front sight post.
SIG P226 ran perfectly, though I didn't shoot it as well as I usually do. I had trouble hitting some of the steel lollipops, even though I was focusing hard on the front sight and trying to get good trigger control. Maybe it was the shivering.
Mossberg 590 ran perfectly also. I couldn't hit the 80 yd steel with 3 slug shots (bead sight), perhaps because there was a wicked heat shimmer off the barrel after heating it up just before.
It was great fun.
After the match I got out my Ruger Ranch Rifle (195 series IIRC) and tried it out at the 200 yd steel... and surprisingly did okay with it. I can barely hit a paper plate at 100 yds but it did fine for me on the 200 yds with cheap TulAmmo. I let a couple other guys try it and they hit 5/5 and 6/6 and 5/5 with it. I was amazed. Seems I suck at rifle shooting, as I've long suspected.
